Uneasy Flowers, the second album by Autistic Daughters, is an incremental improvement over their fine 2004 debut Jealousy and Diamond. But any other degree of advancement would feel inappropriate, since this group's music deals in small steps and minute shifts. This can make for a sleepy listen-- sometimes it even sounds like the trio has drifted off into musical unconsciousness. But more often this album is like a quiet dream, filled with moods and images that linger past the end of each song.
That effect combined with the fact that Autistic Daughters are on Kranky might imply their music is pure ambience. But the trio is actually a song-based entity, relying on vocals, guitars, drums, and some modest electronic effects. The seven tunes here sometimes evoke the soothing drift of Kranky stalwarts like Stars of the Lid. But they're closer sonically to the slow melodies of Low, the soft glitch of the Books, or even Wilco's mellower moments (the alluring bent of Dean Roberts' voice at times recalls Jeff Tweedy). Something beautiful is going on in the west coast, but not the sunsets or the beaches or even the Pacific Ocean, I'm talking about The Coral Sea. Like the vast and colorful vibe the name evokes, The Coral Sea's music, full of depth and harmony, with such a genuine quality that it could only have been inspired by quiet moments alone in the car.
The five-piece was formed in 2005 by the lead singer and songwriter Rey Villalobos. Their self-produced first album "Volcano and Heart," was released in 2006. After their debut, they toured the US and the UK, sharing bills with artists such as The Walkmen, St. Vincent, Sea Wolf, The Silversun Pickups, and Frank Black. They have also been in rotation on numerous radio shows, including KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic. Tracks from the album also caught the attention of ABC TV and were featured on two episodes of Grey's Anatomy.
Over this past year, the band has focused on creating a new album. Villalobos makes sure to always carry his acoustic guitar with him everywhere he goes, just in case inspiration strikes. One of such places was his car, where the rudiments of the majority of the new album were composed. The unpredictability of the way in which the songs were first originated makes them feel effortless, while the thought out development and expansion upon the initial ideas makes the songs very polished. Some tracks, such From Arizona to Barcelona, were completely rearranged a month after the band had established how they would be. with "automne fold", david letellier has evolved from the quiet, pristine flow of his debut record to sounds that are raw, dark and organic on this second release. pulsating rhythms become lost in within walls of saturated strings, words are spoken over bowed acoustic guitars, and analog synths collide with urban field recordings.
vocals are a central theme through the record. treated as raw materials, like any other sound, the voice operates as beat, speaks melodies or sets themes.
in some moments, "automne fold" retains the emotional simplicity of traditional song structures, where message and images come together, but also manages radical abstract textures, when tracks morph in closed forms of static sounds.

As these definitions would indicate, these pieces are focused on the subtle layering and juxtaposition of phrases, loops and field recordings. As in nature, they have evolved over the last couple years through several cycles of processing, addition and subtraction. Some began as more structured compositions, but over time as the melodies began to blur, interesting relationships developed when these "sound strata" were combined, removed or revealed.
The Green Kingdom is Michael Cottone, a graphic designer and sound artist based in Michigan. His compositions blur the line between soundscape and structure, utilizing a variety of processed acoustic and electronic sources, sampled textures and field recordings. Meticulously painted, gouaches on Mylar recall modernist architectural drawings. White buildings, encrusted in saline icebergs, float in night seas, as in The M-House got lost and found itself floating in the sea, affecting salination [sic] levels in the North Atlantic, 2004. In his series, The Return, 2005, shards of staircases, piles of rectangular blocks, or rectilinear posts emerge like ghosts from leafy, green-blue overgrowth, as if a former catastrophe had subsided over the ages into a fragmented but purer world. The viral quality of Joshua Allen Harris's inflatable street art has attracted a brand. The Environmental Defense Fund uses video of Harris's Polar Bears to help raise awareness about global warming and draw attention to the mode of transportation available beneath the city
Harris's creatures circled the blogosphere a few months back when camera phone videos captured piles of garbage as they transformed into dancing animals and monsters when the subway system below the New York streets created enough wind to breathe life into them. I love the fantasy and playfulness that the art project brings into seemingly unremarkable New York scenes and an otherwise normal day in the life of a passerby.
