vellum | d / sk 2009
slices of a virtual sculpture, dimension 100 x 125 x 80 meters
video artist, sound design: robert seidel
comission: art center nabi, seoul

In a time of complete virtualisation of knowledge, science and monetary flows the virtual sculpture “vellum” transfers the memory of one specific urban rhythm to another locality. The multiple LED screens of the COMO at SKT Tower (Seoul, South Korea) provide several thinly sliced views into this gigantic translucent formation, revealing time and space within the otherwise invisible as well as impossible structure.

The perceived interpenetration of skeletal architecture and unrolled landscapes reveal textures of the man-made restructuring of nature. Their different granular perspectives create a fibrous volume of possibilities fusing past, present and future. In their flatness the visible sculptural slices are reminiscent to our accelerated life, shifting into technology and transcending the physical body. The perceived transformation is based on the sculpture wandering through the building seen from a fixed point of view. In vellum motion is form and form is motion...

Society6 stands for a world where art is inclusive and diversity of expression is celebrated. Where individual artists have the proper societal support, freedom, confidence, and resources to realize their full creative potential.

Create works that reflect the human conditions of our society. In spite of the significant contributions that artists make to the vitality of our communities, there hasn’t been an adequate support structure in place to empower artists to realize their best work, on their own terms – until now. Society6 is a platform for emerging and established artists from every creative discipline to showcase their talent as it unfolds. An online community where no one who is doing good work remains undiscovered and without opportunities – anywhere in the world. Society6 pushes the physical boundaries of creativity inviting everyone who is inspired by the artistic process, as much as the end-result, to contribute to the cultural commentary. Society6 is the nexus of original artistic works created and curated by the artists and supporters themselves – providing direct access to quality people, art and events that you want to know about.

A trip across Paris in a van. Lost drumsticks. A cafe you'd never expect to visit before the age of 60. An hour of waiting, and then, voilà--a few notes on the harmonium, a grand piano, a heavenly voice. Sigur Ros on a Take Away Show.

Rose Lorkowski (Amy Adams) finds herself a single mother attempting to support her son Oscar (Jason Spevack) and her unreliable sister Norah (Emily Blunt) while working a mundane job as a maid. Once the head cheerleader in school with plenty of prospects, Rose now has little to show for her years, and while she still sees the former lead football player (Steve Zahn), it is little more than a despondent affair. When Oscar is expelled from public school, Rose takes a job as a bio-hazard crime-scene cleaner to help pay for a private education, and brings Norah on to help in her steadily growing business. As the sisters work to clean up the messes left behind by the chaotic lives of others, they must learn to reconcile their own differences and overcome a troubled past if they hope to prosper in their newfound venture. People have been reporting sightings of Ivory-bills ever since they were presumed to have gone extinct in the early 1940's. For decades, these people have been ridiculed and ostracized no matter how impressive their birding credentials. All of that changed in 2004 when an Ivory-bill sighting by a lone kayaker in Arkansas' Bayou deView was passed on to the prestigious Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University. The rest is history, as they say, except that the person who forwarded the kayaker's e-mail to Cornell was Mary Scott. Find out who she is and why she's been left out of the story of the Ivory-bill's rediscovery. Ghost Bird Movie

" Coda " - Haute Areal - 2008
Electro / Punk / Experimental

German electronic music can mean one of two things– either a sometimes niche but well respected genre where its listeners can wax lyrical for hours about its heritage, or it can reference the odd dubious euro hit that has, on occasion, sauntered into our top 10. Luckily for listeners, MIT do not follow the path of the latter. However neither do they take their well referenced musical heritage and run full steam in a new and exciting direction. No, Coda is exactly as it initially promises– very electronic and very German.

Sure, so you don’t speak the language, but when MIT are shouting, you will dance. This is perhaps the most important underpinning feature that runs throughout Coda. As with many electronic masterpieces, by the end of the album, you feel that between the swirling of synths and the incomprehensible barking orders form an unnamed source, you’ve likely just been ordained into some unholy cult. Coda is not for the weak minded or singles lover, this is an all encompassing music marathon with most tracks just shy of a 5 minute run. The feeling is not epic, rather just a continuous flow that you suspect– if pesky management hadn’t stepped in– the band could’ve kept up for a few weeks solid, at least. Rock Feedback

" Mega Breakfast " - Lo Recordings - 2008
Indie / Electronic / Experimental

The Chap courted a good deal of attention thanks to their odd glitch pop aesthetic, as captured on albums Ham and The Horse, but this time around they've outdone themselves, introducing their new material via the barbershop quartet-meets-Hot Chip dynamics of 'They Have A Name', only to slip into the single 'Fun & Interesting', which sounds disconcertingly like Queen in its theatrical harmonised vocal execution. In fact, seldom does something so daft sound so lovingly crafted: just listen to the big production and the sweeping strings. They're hardly befitting a song that comically boasts "my generation needs another me". Boomkat

“ með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust ” - Xl Recordings - 2008
Indie / Experiemntal

Sigur Rós will be releasing their fifth album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English translation: with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly), worldwide the week of June 23. The first track from the album, entitled "Gobbledigook," is available worldwide for free download via Sigur Ros. The video for the song is also on the website.

" unitxt " - Raster-Noton - 2008
Electronic / Experimental

Of all the rhythm-based music by Alva Noto, this latest batch probably marks the greatest levels of detail and elaboration. If an album like Transform was largely characterised by a strict and pristine approach to minimalism and subtlety, Unitxt presents a more complex and full-blooded exercise. The essential building blocks of the Alva Noto sound remain pared down and elemental, but there's something uncommonly visceral about Nicolai's compositional technique this time around, which while still familiar and unmistakably his work, sounds charged with renewed levels of ferocity and kinetic energy. " The Hungry Saw " - Beggars - 2008
Alternative

Nottingham’s Tindersticks draw on a broad range of influences (from Nick Drake and Scott Walker to Dusty In Memphis and Barry White) with poignant depth, cinematic sweep and enviable perfectionism. That’s great and all, but doesn’t quite explain what has made the band (active since 1994 and always seemingly on the verge of disappearing) so eccentric and endearing. Tindersticks have always stood out from the attention-deficient British music scene by virtue of their humanism. They echo their heroes’ pop classicism without directly striving for their stylish detachment. Tindersticks aren’t afraid to bleed on their wrinkle-free tuxedoes. Their fragile ballads linger like half-forgotten dreams, deeply romantic yet always tinged with regret. Their lush arrangements are often intentionally awkward and sour, transcending OST utility with a nerve that won’t be ignored. There exists no Tindersticks song with a simple, unclouded theme. No filler, no relief. Emerson Dameron - Dusted Magazine

" Airships Fill The Sky " - Anticipate - 2007
Electronic / IDM / Experimental

Morgan Packard
Sounding both referential and unique at the same time, "Airships Fill The Sky" is an album that I just keep on going back to - and if this isn't enough for our tiny minds to handle, there's another full album in DVD format, 'Unsimulatable' which sees Packard's audio experiments set to equally moving visuals by Joshue Ott. These intricate and somewhat polar-looking meshes of computer generated lines and textures are weirdly alluring and should have you in a James Woods-style state in no time - trust me. Packard has created a truly captivating album here which we're totally passionate about, we implore you to investigate, it's one of the year's finest. Essential purchase. Boomkat

" Lie Down In The Light " - Domino - 2008
Alternative / Indie / Folk

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy returns with a brand new album - not a covers album (like the recent Ask Forgiveness) and not a sketched collection of demos (like the even more recent Wai Notes), but a proper studio-recorded follow-up to 2006's The Letting Go. Musically, Lie Down In The Light is a lot less flashy and polished than its Valgeir Sigurdsson-produced predecessor, dropping the string sections and carefully sculpted electronic elements in favour of a more traditional country sound, the most recent precedent for which would be Master & Everyone. Overall you'd have to view this newie as a generally more upbeat affair than that 2003 LP, but both albums benefit from the bright, unfussy production of Lambchop's Mark Nevers. Boomkat

" Lost and Safe " - Tomlab - 2005
Alternative / Indie / Experimental

One thing's for sure. The Books make their particular brand of musical genius seem perfectly effortless. Their playful yet intricate sound collages on third album 'Lost And Safe' have the feel of a genuinely happy accident. It's as if they couldn't have possibly planned it to be this way, the sounds fell out of the machine just like that. But of course they must have engaged brains. Despite The Books endearingly child-clumsy (yet sophisticated) sound, or cheeky humour (witness the distinctly silly "I am the angel of death" sample on 'If Not Now, Whenever') a set of tuned plastic drain pipes or a vintage clavinet requires at least some forethought, albeit originating from a slightly unusual kind of thinking. playlouder

Last year, in the endless magic hour of the Icelandic summer, Sigur Rós played a series of concerts around their homeland. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world’s shyest and least understood bands captured live in their natural habitat.

The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful ‘Takk…’ album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the hoofprint of Odin’s horse, Sleipnir*, the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.

Sea Hyun lee paintings are a constant and obsessive shuffling of recurring fragments. His unmistakable series of landscapes are rendered in delicate but pervasive washes of red - large swaths of unmarked white meandering between islands of crimson land. The blank spaces are harshly set against the carefully detailed fragments in red yet cohering into the flawless totality that is created by each painting.

This body of work endlessly revisits and reconstitutes the landscape of the DMZ - The Demilitarized Zone cutting across the Korean Peninsula that acts as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. Reworking fragments of terrain, blocks of land and water, Lee creates a world functioning according to the logic of its own terms. In this sense, it is a world that is entirely hermetic - appropriately so, considering that the territory Lee depicts is defined by the very impregnability of its borders. Creativ Europe

Fons Scheidon is one of those unique voices that comes jetting down from the mesosphere every so often with a project that could only come from his delightfully odd mind. For his latest gig, a music video for Voicst’s “Feel Like a Rocket,” Fons teamed up with some of the same crew that worked on the MTV Asia MobSquad series, including the bad-ass character animators at Brazilian studio Birdo.
