" Coda " - Haute Areal - 2008
Electro / Punk / Experimental

German electronic music can mean one of two things– either a sometimes niche but well respected genre where its listeners can wax lyrical for hours about its heritage, or it can reference the odd dubious euro hit that has, on occasion, sauntered into our top 10. Luckily for listeners, MIT do not follow the path of the latter. However neither do they take their well referenced musical heritage and run full steam in a new and exciting direction. No, Coda is exactly as it initially promises– very electronic and very German.

Sure, so you don’t speak the language, but when MIT are shouting, you will dance. This is perhaps the most important underpinning feature that runs throughout Coda. As with many electronic masterpieces, by the end of the album, you feel that between the swirling of synths and the incomprehensible barking orders form an unnamed source, you’ve likely just been ordained into some unholy cult. Coda is not for the weak minded or singles lover, this is an all encompassing music marathon with most tracks just shy of a 5 minute run. The feeling is not epic, rather just a continuous flow that you suspect– if pesky management hadn’t stepped in– the band could’ve kept up for a few weeks solid, at least. Rock Feedback

" Mega Breakfast " - Lo Recordings - 2008
Indie / Electronic / Experimental

The Chap courted a good deal of attention thanks to their odd glitch pop aesthetic, as captured on albums Ham and The Horse, but this time around they've outdone themselves, introducing their new material via the barbershop quartet-meets-Hot Chip dynamics of 'They Have A Name', only to slip into the single 'Fun & Interesting', which sounds disconcertingly like Queen in its theatrical harmonised vocal execution. In fact, seldom does something so daft sound so lovingly crafted: just listen to the big production and the sweeping strings. They're hardly befitting a song that comically boasts "my generation needs another me". Boomkat

“ með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust ” - Xl Recordings - 2008
Indie / Experiemntal

Sigur Rós will be releasing their fifth album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English translation: with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly), worldwide the week of June 23. The first track from the album, entitled "Gobbledigook," is available worldwide for free download via Sigur Ros. The video for the song is also on the website.

" unitxt " - Raster-Noton - 2008
Electronic / Experimental

Of all the rhythm-based music by Alva Noto, this latest batch probably marks the greatest levels of detail and elaboration. If an album like Transform was largely characterised by a strict and pristine approach to minimalism and subtlety, Unitxt presents a more complex and full-blooded exercise. The essential building blocks of the Alva Noto sound remain pared down and elemental, but there's something uncommonly visceral about Nicolai's compositional technique this time around, which while still familiar and unmistakably his work, sounds charged with renewed levels of ferocity and kinetic energy. Warp Light District @ WaterFront Rotterdam 06 Jun

Warp Light District Presents :
Friday 6th of June
WaterFront Rotterdam
Electro-Visual Night

Dubstep/Grime/Electronica/IDM/Visual night

Mary Anne Hobbs (Planet Mu/BBC 1 Radio)
Mary Anne Hobbs is regarded as a pioneer of contemporary underground sounds , Her 'Breezeblock' show ran for almost a decade and in it's time featured exclusive live perfromances & interviews from some of the most forward thinking names in contemporary music. Bjork, The Bug, Squarepusher, DJ Shadow and Skream have all found themselves championed as part of Hobbs' fresh new counter culture contributing to what has become considered a landmark in progressive broadcasting. In September 2006 the Breezeblock name was dropped for the title 'Experimental', but the show retained the name of its host in the title as well as the groundbreaking musical remit of it's predecessor.

Milanese (Planet Mu/Warp) feat. Ben Sharpa
World premiere live collaboration between Milanese , Birmimgham's major producer from Warp and Planet Mu, and Ben Sharpa , South AfricanMC exclusively touring Europe this summer.

Since his debut release, Cognac on Various Productions in 2003, Milanese has appeared on Warp, Arcola, Planet Mu, Seed, MG77 and Combat Recordings. His first full-length album, Extend, dropped like an anvil on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu imprint, pulling together vicious grime workouts, haunting techno and gritty sound design. The end of this month sees tracks from Extend chopped up and reconstructed by the likes of Clark, Hrdvsion and DJ Distance, and released on Planet Mu as a remix EP entitled Adapt.

Steve personally describes his music as a mash-up of jungle / garage / ragga / electro / techno... twisted robot music that sounds like a computer game gone horribly wrong but this description belies the fierce, raw aggression of his rumbling beats and the sinister emotional tone and sophisticated panache of his production, or as UK Bass Music.

Kgotso Semela aka Ben Sharpa aka Oh Kaptain My Kaptain ( South Africa) is a veteran underground rapper and music producer. Considered by many as one of South Africa's most accomplished lyricists, Ben Sharpa is a founding member of cult crews GroundWorks and Audio Visual.

Cane vs Funckarma (Colony/Warp)
Cane is the Techno-Acid-Electro alter ego of brothers Don and Roel Funcken, Funckarma, Shadow Huntaz & Quench. Where FUNCKARMA has an experimental focus within electronic music, CANE takes aim at the dance floor, interlacing Acid, Electro, and Techno infusions with an IDM flavour.
Cane distinguishes themselves within the Techno world by their intermittent use of the 4/4 pulse, having it constantly morph into alternating rhythmic forms without ever abandoning that pulsating dancebeat. With releases on the worldwide renowned WARP records from London (Arcola series), Manchester's SKAM records (home base of giants Autechre and Boards or Canada), Oscar Mulero's WARMUP recordings, Colony Records (Dave Tipper), Athens' Creative Space and Utrecht's own 030303 ACID posse, CANE has proven to be no fly-by-night act.

Emotional Spy (Warp Light District)
Often dark, always possessed and looking for a direct mental reaction. Finding inspiration from lack of sleep, his own hyper sensitive reactions or misunderstood feelings and happenings, Emotional Spy music is all about manipulating electronics to soundtrack our cracked souls, the unsaid, what you try to read between the lines or from the silence, these feelings that can't be expressed. It's probably there that raises this clinic dimension of descriptiveness in his music, making his tracks leaving in you this taste of soundtracks of non existing movies.

" Dark Enough " - Kill the Dj - 2008
Techno / Minimal / Electro / Electronic

tiga : AWESOME!!!!! My only problem...try to decide which I like best. Fuck...

Following the success of Chloé’s The Waiting Room, the label Kill the Dj continues to redefine a certain idea of electro music with the long-awaited release of the first album by Remote, aka Seb Fouble & Eric Guillanton. 2000-2003: the post-French touch period, everybody is on the look out for something new, and that something new is somewhere out there on vinyl. Seb & Eric release their first maxi as Joe Zas & Co. on Pamplemousse. Then another, this a really important record, a witness to its time: Astroglide, considered as one of the best maxis in 2003 by the press and DJs alike. Then the incredible first EP by Henry Goes Dirty, Seb & Eric’s side project, citing Sonic Youth and Syd Barett as well as Phuture as influences. A bizarre mix of electro-pop-rock revealing the roots of what is now REMOTE’s identity: a totally personal appropriation of current trends tinged with a certain independent romantism.

" Wolves And Wishes " - Anticon - 2008
Indie / Experimental / Electronic

Wolves and Wishes, Martin Dosh fourth official LP, arrives after its architect spent nearly a year on the road--touring solo and as a member of Andrew Bird’s band--and yet, he sounds reborn. If 2006’s The Lost Take reimagined the drums, Rhodes and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink virtuoso as a full band, his latest restocks the lineup with a fresh cast of collaborators, then stretches out as Dosh masterminds the material (composing, improvising, arranging) with all the explorative wonderment of a debut ablum. Never has our man sounded so free. And to think, there’s not a single drum machine in the mix. Anticon

" Bersarin Quartett " - Lidar - 2008
Electronic / Experimental / Ambient

After two contributions to the highly successful Electronica Unplugged compilation series on the Aerotone netlabel, Bersarin Quartett is prepared to take the world by storm with its debut release. Contrary to its namesake, Quartett is merely a one man show -- a "Thomas" -- who at this point in time remains mysterious and would rather let the music speak for itself. An attached press release informs the inquisitive listener that Thomas likens his music to "imaginary fictional filmscores" (as opposed to the "real fictional filmscores" or "imaginary factual filmscores"), which puts him directly in the company of four trillion other electronic/ambient artists with soundtrack ambitions. I'll gripe at small redundancies and cliches in the press release, because there's really nothing about the music itself that I can fault; no, quite the contrary, it's one of the best you're likely to hear all year. CALLING ALL VISUAL ARTISTS

Who wants to submit some T.SHIRT designs to Ninja Tune?
We are looking for some skilled ninja artists. We know you're out there and we know you want to get noticed.
There are, of course, some guidelines... like you can only use 2 or 3 colors, and you have to put 'Ninja Tune' somewhere in the design. Remember, these are for t.shirts, not album cover artwork. You can put something on the front, on the back, or on the sleeve(s). All submissions have to be received by JUNE 1, so start thinking about it now and respond to this bulletin with your info TODAY.

To be considered for this contest, simply reply to this post with the following info:
a). your name
b). your email
c). a link to view some of your work (myspace profile is acceptable if you have stuff on there, link us to those images). Don't worry if you've never done any t.shirt designs, we just want to see your style.

If your work is to our liking, you will get more details and a template for the t.shirt design. We will also give you some hi-res ninja tune logos/images to play with.
If your design is selected as one of the 8 finalists, it will be submitted to hundreds of retailers across the U.S., who will then pick their favorites to buy in mass quantities! If your design is selected to go into production we'll give you some kind of outrageous prize like $200 to spend in the ninjashop, or guestlist to shows, or you hang out with your favorite artist on the label for one whole day! (not really the latter, we can't promise that).

Ari Folman animated documentary could easily turn out to be one of the most powerful statements of this Cannes and will leave its mark forever on the ethics of war films in general. Dealing from a very personal point of view with the Israeli incursion into the Lebanon in 1982 and culminating with the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp massacre, which the Israelis did not perpetrate but surely tolerated, this is not only a tremendously potent anti-war movie but also a formidable moral indictment of Israeli conduct at that time. " For Screening Purposes Only " - Domino - 2005
Indie Rock / Post Hardcore / Noise Rock / Art punk

Another of my favorites . Test Icicles ( R.I.P )
Deranged disco metal? Gonzo noise-punk firebrands? Genre munching mega racket? Chaotic noise-hop? Here are a band who namecheck Motley Crue, Rick James, Pharell Williams, Slick Rick and Slayer as well as an increasingly long list of future star bands like Need New Bodies and Sex Positions. At 25 (Rory Atwell) and 19 (Sam Mehran and Devonte Hynes) they listen to everything: metal, grime, hardcore, rock, hip hop, pop. It's all in there. And boy,can you tell.
Test Icicles sound like Bloc Party on drugs and in detention. Or a parallel universe Rancid wired into the touretting energy of early Beastie Boys. Or, indeed, an amalgam of almost everyone you can think of . Is a screaming, thrashing pedal-to-the-metal hardcore pop freak-out.

" To Survive " - Reveal - 2008
Indie / Singer-Songwriter

Two years after her debut solo album, Real Life, Joan as Police Woman is ready for the release of her new album , " To Survive " out June 10th via Cheap Lullaby Records.

After years of performing alongside the likes of Lou Reed, Anthony and the Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright, Joan struck out on a solo path – creating Joan as Police Woman and honing a soulful yet edgy sound that would grab critics’ and audiences’ attention immediately. Real Life was released in the UK in 2006 and US in 2007 to rave reviews, and To Survive follows in the same footsteps as its predecessor with ten new tracks addressing life, love, death, and the current state of American politics.

Holy Fuck was Hailed as one of the top 3 performances at Glastonbury Festival '07 :
"Electo-pop perverts Holy Fuck make a noise as abrasive as it is awesome ... these dark disco droogs thread every sound under the sun through their electric playground of wires. They come on like the nastiest electronic band since Suicide, or like the The Fall reworking their brains with screwdrivers, or Add N to (X) playing speed metal. They're the kind of band that could hoof a hangover to kingdome come, or wring the neck of a banal main stage performance." NME Magazine

" Unconquered " - This Quite Army - 2008
Experimental / Electronic / Post-Rock

"Unconquered is a fitting name for the release – it presents unheard-of territory within the confines of the ambient-drone subgenre, and quickly This Quite Army claims it as his own. The release is so fresh, so satisfying, that it makes you wonder why no one else has tried any of this (on this scale) before. I can't answer that question, but I do know this: there will be a lot of artists following in the footprints left by this album. It may not be a perfect album, but the most adventurous ones never are – perfection requires a commitment that musical explorers cannot make, and to fault them for pushing the boundaries of genre is to have gravely mistaken priorities." The Silent Ballet , Zach Mills

Jean-Julien Pous’ latest short film, “Seeking You,” is a poetically ambiguous ode to sensuality, seduction and, ultimately, the cacophonous beauty of Hong Kong. Its hybrid imagery dances between the figurative and abstract, pulling the viewer into a vortex of sensory overload inspired by the film’s subject matter. Motionographer

" The Hungry Saw " - Beggars - 2008
Alternative

Nottingham’s Tindersticks draw on a broad range of influences (from Nick Drake and Scott Walker to Dusty In Memphis and Barry White) with poignant depth, cinematic sweep and enviable perfectionism. That’s great and all, but doesn’t quite explain what has made the band (active since 1994 and always seemingly on the verge of disappearing) so eccentric and endearing. Tindersticks have always stood out from the attention-deficient British music scene by virtue of their humanism. They echo their heroes’ pop classicism without directly striving for their stylish detachment. Tindersticks aren’t afraid to bleed on their wrinkle-free tuxedoes. Their fragile ballads linger like half-forgotten dreams, deeply romantic yet always tinged with regret. Their lush arrangements are often intentionally awkward and sour, transcending OST utility with a nerve that won’t be ignored. There exists no Tindersticks song with a simple, unclouded theme. No filler, no relief. Emerson Dameron - Dusted Magazine

" Airships Fill The Sky " - Anticipate - 2007
Electronic / IDM / Experimental

Morgan Packard
Sounding both referential and unique at the same time, "Airships Fill The Sky" is an album that I just keep on going back to - and if this isn't enough for our tiny minds to handle, there's another full album in DVD format, 'Unsimulatable' which sees Packard's audio experiments set to equally moving visuals by Joshue Ott. These intricate and somewhat polar-looking meshes of computer generated lines and textures are weirdly alluring and should have you in a James Woods-style state in no time - trust me. Packard has created a truly captivating album here which we're totally passionate about, we implore you to investigate, it's one of the year's finest. Essential purchase. Boomkat

" Lie Down In The Light " - Domino - 2008
Alternative / Indie / Folk

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy returns with a brand new album - not a covers album (like the recent Ask Forgiveness) and not a sketched collection of demos (like the even more recent Wai Notes), but a proper studio-recorded follow-up to 2006's The Letting Go. Musically, Lie Down In The Light is a lot less flashy and polished than its Valgeir Sigurdsson-produced predecessor, dropping the string sections and carefully sculpted electronic elements in favour of a more traditional country sound, the most recent precedent for which would be Master & Everyone. Overall you'd have to view this newie as a generally more upbeat affair than that 2003 LP, but both albums benefit from the bright, unfussy production of Lambchop's Mark Nevers. Boomkat

" Lost and Safe " - Tomlab - 2005
Alternative / Indie / Experimental

One thing's for sure. The Books make their particular brand of musical genius seem perfectly effortless. Their playful yet intricate sound collages on third album 'Lost And Safe' have the feel of a genuinely happy accident. It's as if they couldn't have possibly planned it to be this way, the sounds fell out of the machine just like that. But of course they must have engaged brains. Despite The Books endearingly child-clumsy (yet sophisticated) sound, or cheeky humour (witness the distinctly silly "I am the angel of death" sample on 'If Not Now, Whenever') a set of tuned plastic drain pipes or a vintage clavinet requires at least some forethought, albeit originating from a slightly unusual kind of thinking. playlouder

Last year, in the endless magic hour of the Icelandic summer, Sigur Rós played a series of concerts around their homeland. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world’s shyest and least understood bands captured live in their natural habitat.

The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful ‘Takk…’ album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the hoofprint of Odin’s horse, Sleipnir*, the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.

Sea Hyun lee paintings are a constant and obsessive shuffling of recurring fragments. His unmistakable series of landscapes are rendered in delicate but pervasive washes of red - large swaths of unmarked white meandering between islands of crimson land. The blank spaces are harshly set against the carefully detailed fragments in red yet cohering into the flawless totality that is created by each painting.

This body of work endlessly revisits and reconstitutes the landscape of the DMZ - The Demilitarized Zone cutting across the Korean Peninsula that acts as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. Reworking fragments of terrain, blocks of land and water, Lee creates a world functioning according to the logic of its own terms. In this sense, it is a world that is entirely hermetic - appropriately so, considering that the territory Lee depicts is defined by the very impregnability of its borders. Creativ Europe
