Anna Taratiel aka "Ovni" Interview

Barcelona artist Anna Taratiel aka "Ovni" pushes the limits and creates Stunningly beautiful unreal installations unique street art and illustrations , she uses her life experiences and reshape them into abstract multidimensional worlds full of energy.

Who's "Ovni" ?

Ovni is me, and in spanish means ufo.
was the first artistic name that i used to explain my concept.
as a metaphor to interpret my designs as spaces and abstract landscapes.

Like a burst of energy where abstract landscapes meet "Outer" dimensions that defy our physic laws and get brushed by an ocean of intense colors , could these be "Ovni" trade marks ?

Yes, it is. My objective is transport everyone to another place, new spaces, different dimension and perspectives.

What's the center of your creativity , where does it come from ?

The structures of the city, arquitecture, the industrialization, the art noveau, the amusement parks, the kids fantasy, the astronauts and space movies, the robots, the colors...

You are both Graphic Designer and Street Artist , is it Street Art your rebel side ? something that Anna Taratiel couldn't show indoors ?

Maybe is a bit chaos but I always like to differentiate from my free side from the more professional. I suppose yes, ovni is rebellious and friendly because i used this name on the streets and the collective shows; and Anna taratiel is the artist with names and surnames for my solo shows.

Considering that around the web your name is praised everywhere , what do you think is so appealing in your work ?

i don't know exactly the reason why, but maybe is because i have a singular style and i can adapt it for all kind of projects from graphic design, to illustration, structures, walls... and my work has been created by my every day experiences and landscapes.

"Dynamic Equilibrium" , what was the concept behind that installation ?

I enjoy doing installions and structures because is a different way to show my concept in 3d dimensions.
Dynamic equilibrium was a commissioned work in Milano "design fair". The brand works in different kind of surfaces, and i had to create a big structure inside a room with its materials. The experience was really interesting, this work got me to improve myself because i designed all the pieces and the dispositions.

"Squared Squared" is one of my favorites , where did you get the idea/inspiration ?

This work was also a commissioned buy a collective that work basically by digital
printing on fabric. They proposed me to do something for interior design fair. The wanted something colorful with light and cubes using their product. i just designed the structure and the compositions getting the inspiration from the 80's aesthetics.

How much barcelona is in your work ?

well, Gaudi is a really inspiring figure in my organic work,
like all the modernism forms and concepts that appeared in the early 19th century.

Our childhood experiences have a huge impact in our lives , do you see some of your early memories in your work ?

since i was a child painting has been a joyful activity which i really like.
Nowadays i still take children's world as a resource for my work.

A normal day in "Ovni" live ?
Sorry, have not a normal day in "ovni" live

5 records you would take to the grave ?

- no P. or D. _ Ms john Soda
- Koop islands _ Koop
- Finally we are no one - Mum
- Silent shout _ the Knife
- Beams _ The presets

Your favorite hang out in Barcelona ?

The barceloneta, the old fishermen's area, which is a place where it still remains the identity of Barcelona. Is a real Place where live emerges; there you can have a nice paella or seafood (for a relatively low price), or you can see hanging clothes on the balconies or just have a bath on the beach.

What's your upcoming plan/project?

Right now I've just started a art direction master degree in barcelona.
And I'm preparing to move to Amsterdam at late july
where I'm going to start a new phase of my life... let's see!!

The Day After Peace,Hollace M. Metzger, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Turmkunst 2010 Berlin,Kitsune 9,Upper First,Bear in Heaven, Happybuddha,mY Indie Soul#32

Jeremy Gilley was an actor before he founded Peace One Day in 1999. He had become disillusioned with his work, but understood the potential of film to positively affect people and create change in the world. So when he set out on his near impossible mission in 1999, he took a camera with him. Every journey made, every country visited and every person met – he got it all on camera. Ten years on, The Day After Peace is his story – the story of Peace One Day.

The Day After Peace charts the remarkable 10-year journey of award-winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish an annual Peace Day on 21 September. The camera follows Jeremy as he galvanises the countries of the world to recognise an official day of ceasefire and non-violence. The Day After Peace

Hollace M. Metzger

"My world exists
but in a sea of graphite,
an infinite reflection in urban puddles
beyond a contemplative visage
and skies of passing clouds,
layers of colors, clothing and canvas
in hues of green and red or blue neon,
in photographed memories
of aged sepia or scalloped black lace,
momentary convex stills in chrome faucets
and a centrifuge of spinning vintage records’
timeless melodies."

from "My world exists" Hollace M. Metzger

"Author, architect and artist Hollace M. Metzger was educated in the US, London and Venice, Italy, before settling into the New York arts scene for the past eight years. Recently, she has been prolific in writing while performing in public salons throughout western Europe, the UK and New York City. In addition to writing, her poetic endeavors include collaborations with composers, choreographers and artists in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Romania and the Netherlands"

And baby I know you're afraid of a lot of things But don't be scared of love... 'cause , People will say all kinds of things

Turmkunst 2010 – Street Art XXL

On April 1st 2010 four international artists will commence work on the most complex canvass Europe has to offer: Honet (France), Sozyone (Spain), Flying Förtress (Germany) and Craig "KR" Costello (USA) will create a new piece of contemporary art 46m above Berlin.

Flying Förtress will start the adventure, Honet will be runner up, and Sozyone will finish the art work on the red facade, while Craig "KR" Costello will krink the grey stem. There will be some night sessions (with spotlights) and an exhibition by our curators, the Vicious Gallery, on the third floor of the building. For those spectators who want to enjoy the open air atmosphere, and watch our heroes at work, a spacious urban art living room and bar with furniture out of concrete will be set up around the tower.

Our Curators Tornow, Grau and Link will accompany the artists throughout the process and this website is your invitation to do the same. Watch our idea grow, contribute and enjoy.

“Red Bloom of the Boom” marks the in-between moment of Jon Philpot's solo explosion becoming a full band's orchestra of sound. "We started clean and natural and as time passed we twisted, distorted and tweaked. After all that we're as handsome as ever," says Philpot, in a simple-yet-accurate explanation of the monster of a band that Bear In Heaven, unassumingly walking the streets of Brooklyn, has so suddenly, but deliberately, become.

The music: Philpot's voice is daydream-and-goosebump-inducing. It glides over walls of melodious distortion, building songs that are unapologetically epic. It is pleasure protracted, climaxes flashing well into songs that are complete sonic sentences. It testifies to psychedelic roots, to the music that we obsessed over in the 90s, and to absolute "future rock." Bear In Heaven is indeed deserving of a new descriptor. HomeTapes

mY Indie Soul # 32
to my lovely sister Ana Martins

Listen | mY Indie Soul # 32

All of mY Indie Souls have a history and events to be inspired from , this by far the easiest of all editions , less experimental no drones or strange glitchy noises and no mad endings

For this edition there's is a very strong female presence and 4 hidden ghosts [Sonic Youth,Pixies,Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine] i've chosen as a flag The wonderful Karen o , Yeah Yeah Yeah , 3 of most underrated bands ever , Autolux , Electro Group and Airiel , but by the looks of the music scenario this year is gonna change very rapidly , Rock is full on and there is a awesome shoegaser revival , the drum n bass vs electro experiences will not survive its like eating a orange and a papaya at the same time too sweet , Rock vs Hip Hop might have legs to walk maybe but not yet.

Also some new discoveries , a great brooklyn band Bear in Heaven , my favorite track from the new Kitsune Maison 9 "Your Nature - Forward Motion" , the New Yorkers You Say Party! We Say Die! and New Young Pony Club the Wales indie rockers Two door cinema club and the awesome Canadien We are Wolves
Also on board Bradford Cox and his great Atlas Sound and the brand new Finish Huskey Rescue

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - The Sweets
Autolux - Plantlive
Electro Group - la ballena algeria
Atlas Sound - Ativan
Bear in Heaven - You Do You
Husky Rescue - They Are Coming
Your Nature - Forward Motion
The Clientele - Sketch
You Say Party! We Say Die! - She's Spoken For
New Young Pony Club - Rapture

Los Angeles noise trio Autolux new album finally is going to see daylight ,
" Transit Transit " follows " Future Perfect " and will be released by Atp Recordings and Tbd Records.
A second album is always tricky business and i'm keeping my fingers crossed for them.
"Future Perfect" is among my favorite albums , a sonic relic , great drumming by Clara Azar , brilliant vibrant distorted bass and melancholic strident loud guitars. Would please very much any Sonic Youth fan.

Having grown up on the West Coast most of my life and coming from a family of uber ‘antique’ collectors and artists, my eclectic upbringing was filled with a wide range of ’Pop’ ephemera. Many of those inspirations now show up in my work and stem from the backdrop of my childhood.
The Subject of my paintings is a world of side-show icons, deviant Animalia, and ‘masked’ glorified cartoon alter egos. I utilize these icons and character cultures as antithetical counterparts to what we are lead to believe as being innocent and socially acceptable. Although misfits on the surface, a sense of relation is understood, secret from the public - we are all misfits; hiding behind animated personas, odd and beautifully unusual. Who is it that we relate to? The lonely little boy hiding in a bear suite, the evil lustful pool-hall wolf, the sexualized little girl who secretly wants more. The environment and its limited population are meant to conjure these questions, the viewers are confronted with finding their own answers. Brandt Peters

Great free compilation by Exploding in sound !

I can honestly say that I feel this is best release yet. The album features 20 incredible appearances from Traindodge, Mr. Gnome, LIONS, Regular John, Disco Doom, And So I Watch You From Afar, White Belt Yellow Tag, Turbo Fruits, Ceremony, Apteka, Battleme, and more!! Scouring the globe… and the internet… for the greatest bands that need to be heard, Glorious Noise is an international affair, with submissions from the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Great rock music with integrity, intelligence, and intensity is being made worldwide, and Exploding In Sound is dedicated to bringing you the best of the best.

Shlomo Koren , Eric de Nie

An amazing painting i bought today from Israel painter/sculpture based in Amsterdam shlomo koren at the SBK Galerie 23 Amsterdam. I don't wanna say something stupid or sound ignorant but this could be a very minimal jackson pollock with a Rothko intensity , probably because those are the ones i fell more close. As from the sounds that comes from it its without any doubt the glitchy world of Vladislav Delay.

I only saw this painting when i was leaving the gallery , i had another painting and left the gallery nearly heartbroken for leaving this behind.
Ten minutes into driving home turned around , went back to the gallery and naturally swapped it.

It goes perfect with the sonic awesomeness relic by Dutch painter Eric de Nie
