" What She Doesn't Know " 7" - Fat-Cat - 2008
Indie / Singer Songwriter
The two songs on this 7" were recorded during the same sessions with Steve Albini that spawned Nina Nastasia's Fat Cat debut LP, On Leaving. One of the tracks here might be seen as a bridge between that album and last year's collaborative full-length with Dirty Three drummer Jim White, You Follow Me: 'Your Red Nose' is an uptempo duet between White's kit and Nastasia's vocal and acoustic guitar, with typical Albini clarity rendering the production fulsome and well-rounded despite the potential cavity where the bass would normally be. Nastasia collaborates with a different drummer, namely Jay Bellerose, on 'What She Doesn't Know', a gentler piece that beautifully contrasts a powerful, punctuating kick drum against softly plucked guitar phrases. Utterly lovely stuff. Boomkat

" Ghost Town " - Important - 2008
Experimental / Drone / Noise
As one of dual frontmen in Parts & Labor, Dan Friel takes the disobedient squeals of keyboards and other sundry electronics and marries them to more familiar contexts, making otherwise jaw-clenching noise surprisingly palatable while helping the two- to three-chord punk anthem sound new again. On his solo record Ghost Town, he's using many of those same glassy, treble-heavy electronic tones, but just as P&L can replace guitar and bass with unfamiliar sqeals, Friel goes further and replaces the drums, the vocals, and pretty much the whole band with the wheeze and skronk of electronic instruments.
Even as he abandons traditional rock instruments, he bends his new toys to the particular vision of his better-known band-- that is, to twist noise until it's basically pop. Opening track "Ghost Town Pt. 1" builds slowly from honking and sputtering into a thunderous bass chug, setting a rhythm that almost overwhelms its prideful 8-bit-like theme. That same deep, distorted bass is the bedrock of "Desert Song", though its melody is woozier and less distinct than the album opener; high-pitched whistles mark out more video-game territory, but they slide in and out of tune as the cascading mechanical beats take the foreground. "Buzzards" is almost a pocket-sized rave, its rhythm relentless, its keyboards drunkenly melodic, its background whistling and wheezing demanding more and more. The quiet ring of "Ghost Town Pt. 2" has a dog-whistle melody countered by a theremin-like tone, but they fold over each other and slowly recede into another ear-piercer and hip-shaker. From its extended intro to its slow-burning melody matched to a tireless rhythm, it's a distinctly rock move that unfolds like many of P&L's monster singles. Pitchfork

Post-Rock
Red Sparowes is a post-rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, United States, comprising current and former members of Isis, Neurosis, Halifax Pier, Samsara, Angel Hair and Pleasure Forever. Their sound is characteristic of soundscape-influenced experimental rock, with an otherwise uncommon extensive use of a pedal steel guitar.
Red Sparowes formed in 2003 as another project for its members: Bryant Clifford Meyer, Greg Burns, Josh Graham, Jeff Caxide, and Dana Berkowitz. Andy Arahood and david clifford joined the band after the release of Red Sparowes’ debut album, At The Soundless Dawn, as replacements for departed Caxide and Berkowitz respectively.
Through signing to Neurot Recordings, Neurosis’ record label, Red Sparowes toured with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Made Out of Babies in 2004 after recording demos for their debut album. The debut was recorded in late May of 2004 by engineer Desmond Shea, with the resulting sound in the vein of guitarist Bryant Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide’s band Isis, Chicago post-rock/metal outfit Pelican, and New Zealand post-rock band Jakob. Members Jeff Caxide and Dana Berkowitz relocated in late 2004, thus forcing them out of the band.

" The Coachlight Woods " - [ Self Released - 2008 ]
Post-Rock / Ambient / Experimental
With this debut, Glowworm add a worthy entry to post-rock’s already bulging canon. Taking cues from outfits like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, the record’s bread and butter are melody and tension. In creating tension, The Coachlight Woods distinguishes itself by virtue of its details. Front and centre among these details are the contributions of string player Tony Rogers, whose play on cello and viola is concise, versatile and intuitive. Just as important are the album’s ample ambient flourishes, which provide much-needed breathing room in the midst of the vigorous instrumental pomp that defines the record. On an album filled with as many exclamations as this one, these counterpoints are vital. Without them, the result would have been a considerably more tiring and predictable listen. Instead, this Portland, OR duo have created an engaging record built on clever melodic interactions that clearly define their sound. Pras Rajagopalan - Exclaim

" In Her Gentle Jaws " - [ Self Released - 2007 ]
Shoegaze / 8-bit / Experimental
Super Nintendo and shoegaze. Many of those who are legally considered adults at this point will find those two words to be synonymous with the late ’80s, even if both were too separable to ever cross paths. Somewhat surprisingly, it appears as if a band has managed to incorporate the two together into a stylistic fusion of nostalgic proportions, resulting in an extremely distinctive sound that raises questions of whether or not this whole ’80s revival thing occurring rampantly in fashion and music is really a longstanding niche after all. Whether it is their intention or not, the exceedingly creative two members in The Depreciation Guildare sure to attract a large crowd who favors just that. With prominent aspects of guitar-led shoegaze being fused together with the likes of infectious synth-rock and spacey pop, the duo’s influences are impressive in the form of being chronologically diverse. Their synth use is somewhat reminiscent of power-punkers Ozma, incorporating Nintendo-esque 16-bit synth lines with an array of resounding guitars, most of which can lend its shoegaze influences to a heavy amount of reverb being featured beside a variety of guitar pedals and effects. To be honest, The Depreciation Guild present one of the most singularly distinctive styles I have heard all year. Obscured Sound

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview. This was in the midst of Lennon's "bed-in" phase, during which John and Yoko were staying in hotel beds in an effort to promote peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries traditional pen sketches by James Braithwaite with digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation
In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.
Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Towards the end of World War II the staff of SS officer Hans Kammler made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity.
From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.
Now it’s 2018, the Nazi invasion is on its way and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom.

" The Waiting Room " - Kill the Dj - 2007
Electronic / Techno
After five years of sporadic releases on labels like Karat, Gomma and Bpitch Control, French DJ and producer Chloe Thevenin has finally got round to releasing her debut album. The Waiting Room is hardly the straight-forward dancefloor-centric enterprise you might have imagined, taking on all manner of semi-experimental production quirkiness, even throwing in a couple of interstitial tracks that sound like GRM experiments gone wrong. Although hardly the most sophisticated techno you're likely to hear, there's an undeniable charm to Chloe's ramshackle productions. Boomkat

" Tremulant Tympanum " - Wiseowl Records - 2008
Post - Rock / Experimental / Ambient
Vaznis debut album, Tremulant Tympanum, is tense and incredibly complex. Spacey guitar riffs coupled with glitchy beats and mutilated samples create an eerie atmosphere that surrounds you and draws you in. Whitey is a sort-of solo project by N.J Whitey. He collects books, grudges and enemies. Whitey is a hard character to pin down- his genre-twisting songs swing wildly between styles, and his dismissive attitude towards the music industry means there are few shows, and even fewer interviews. He has to date had no real record deal. Yet his distinctive sounds have broken through to mainstream daytime radio in the U.S and elsewhere, and for four straight years his music has been a fixture from rock clubs to fashion runways, from movie soundtracks to television, computer games to skate films. From Japan to Iceland, Moscow to Hollywood. Gradually this cult U.K artist is taking up permanent residence in the shadowy ground between high fashion and mainstream entertainment, between pop radio and whats left of the underground. An outsider who relishes this status, and celebrates this outsider ethos in his work. What else? He's from Coventry.

" Deterioration " - Modern Radio - 2008
Noise / Drone / Experimental
Yellow Swans make the kind of colossally heart-breaking noise that transforms any sober, regular hour you have in a day into some sort of warm, pressurized fever dream. Like a nap you didn’t expect to take, a nap where you dream about people you thought you’d lost, or about faint and slightly unnerving childhood memories. The kind of dream you wake up from and can still taste in your throat. Those already familiar with the duo, I would hope, know this firsthand.
“Deterioration” was originally a cassette only available for a few dates of a European tour. Like a majority of their releases, it is relatively hard to come by. But Modern Radio has given it a proper CD release, and so much the better, for it is certainly an excellent launching point for those uninitiated to the duo—me, included. And though I was bummed to learn that I would not likely be hearing any more from Pete Swanson and Gabriel Saloman’s Yellow Swans moniker, I am sure to be spending the next month or so searching all corners of the internet for the most limited of their releases as though sick with addiction John Ganiard - Foxy Digitalis

" The Four Quarters " - Humme - 2005
Electronic / Dub / Glitch
“Vladislav Delay continues to mine his much loved seam of dub fragranced minimalism, with a sound that seems to have really hit pay-dirt on new album ‘The Four Quarters’. Divided into four extended pieces, this full length has lightness of touch that genuinely defies belief; with Delay allowing the music to unfurl like an aural orchid in both the broadest of strokes and the finest of detail. Opening with (you guessed it brains!) ‘The First Quarter’, Delay initially shuffles into view through a gorgeously rousing blush of diffused atmospherics, onto which he slowly needles bubbling synths, star-bursts of fractured (but in no way imposing) vocals and a spectrum of beats that mine the tradition of his Basic Channel past perfectly. All that and we’re only four minutes in. Continuing in a similarly jaw-dropping style, Delay seems to have returned to the pinnacle of his Chain Reaction excursions, encouraging the listener to submerge ever further by offering half glimpsed aural edifices (some distant crowd noise here, a clutch of Arabic indebted instrumentation there) whilst always littering the foreground with enough pronounced intent to guarantee even the most casual listener will remain enraptured. ‘The Four Quarters’ is a record whose beauty and absolute depth really cannot be overstated.”Boomkat
