Best 2009 Albums

Ive received a email from blogger in behave of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) , they say that this post contains illegal material , so i gently reply asking what was here illegal , so seams like no one really cares , so im reposting my 2009 fav albums.

Vladislav Delay
"Tummaa" - Leaf
Mp3 | Vladislav Delay - Tummaa

My heart almost stopped when i heard that Valdislav Delay new album was out , i was so involved with his last two albums that naturally the expectations were very high.
I cant say that im disappointed with the record , its just that with "Tummaa" Vladislav turn into a more cooperative experience than previous works , the astral random blurs of intensity that were shattered all over "Whistleblower" were a bit gone .
Its a less sonic adventure , more instrument based creation , maybe less abstract but more complex , perhaps a melting point with a more futuristic approach with his jazz drumming background.

Hildur Gudnadottir
" Without Sinking " - Touch
Mp3 | Hildur Gudnadottir - Ascent

Hildur debut on touch records appeared quite early in the year and was one of the first that i knew would be on this list.
" Without Sinking " its a remarkable piece of instrumental music , what i like about it is the intensity that Hildur uses on the her cello , its a extraordinary journey full of soundscapes that describes the many hours Hildur spend cruising around the globe staring at the passing clouds.

Ben Frost
"By The Throat" - Bedroom Community
Mp3 | Ben Frost - Killshot

Another of my mega favorites , as soon as got my and on Ben Frost new album a ritual took place , lights off , headphones on , light a cigarette and may the force be with me . What did i expected ? naturally something on the lines of Theory of Machines , the first track bring back those happy sound memories , 10 sharp raiser blade slowly open the chest and my soul is free , like a hurricane flying at the speed of light , a thousand waves rapping thru the defensive shields of atlantis , what i love most about Ben's music is intensity and unpredictability full of high and low's , or you could be on the bottom of the ocean and jumped on a jet stream and in 38.5 seconds arriving at the Moon.

Soap & Skin
" Lovetune For Vacuum " Pias
Mp3 | Soap&Skin - Cynthia

The first time i heard Eighteen-year old Austrian Anja Plaschg didn't really caught my ear , was on a second accidental listening when "Cynthia" appeared on one of my playlists that Soap & Skin debut album became one instant favorite , its a dark , morbid and gothic record , the kind that would send someone to be burn alive for witchcraft , the piano and her voice combines for a explosive mixture.

The Bloody Beetroots
"Romborama" - Dim Mac
Mp3 | The Bloody Beetroots - Romborama (feat. All Leather)

The biggest bad ass dj duo in z planet , The Bloody Beetroots need no introduction but just for those who don't know them , they are Italian Bob Rifo and DJ Tommy Tea , together they turn the world up side down with this electro bang noise.
The mega highly anticipated record had one problem attach to it , were the mixes they made for other artists better than their originals ? The are equally awesome and may the noise be with them for a long time.

Danny Norbury
" Light in August " - Lacies
Mp3 | Danny Norbury - Light in August

Half joking half serious sometimes i say that if the men's body extension is the gun the women is the cello. I've been following as much as possible this apparent alternative ladies with cello movement , its all started with Julia Kent , Zoe Keating , Bela Emerson and Hildur Gudnadottir they all play in a very distinct way and when i heard Danny's cello i was absolute dazzled , it sounded a lot like Julia Kent sort of Post-Classic with is simplicity and harmonies , just if like you could combine Spring and Autumn in a pallet of sounds , the Simplicity and intensity of the cello with almost dreamy like piano splashes , Its just beautiful , there's no need to try to explain it , just listen and enjoy it

Mokira
"Persona" - Type
Mp3 | Mokira - valla torg kraut

There was a huge buzz surrounding Andreas Tilliander album , if u could combine the likes of Vladislav Delay and Tim Hecker in a single album it would sound exactly like this. When you add all this elements with some brilliant looped dubs rambling bass into the equation a dazzling album is born.

Pan American
"White Bird" - Kranky
Mp3 | Pan American - both literally and figuratively

Pan American is Labradford guitarist Mark Nelson solo new album.
I think what attracts me to ambient music is that it gives me time to think about what im listening to , like a very imaginary encounter with the sounds that carry a very personal message , i get very close to these records , i love to listen to them when im on the train , it gives a idea of abstract time travel , a bit like Spielberg's close encounters.

Heather Woods Broderick
"From The Ground" - Preservation
Mp3 | Heather Woods Broderick - Left

I was completely by surprise with this record , was by pure accident that i heard it for the first time , when i look at the title i thought that was a collaboration between peter broderick and other musicians , actually turn out to be his sister debut. when i looked up on youtube and heard the first cords of wounded bird , it sounded just like Leonard Cohen soul , even more surprised after listening to the whole record , folk , drones and beautiful tones of cellos and piano , really magical , at same point ad this idea of something that could sound like the merge of New Orleans Belong and Swedish Ane Brun .

Vitalic
"Flashmob" - Different
Mp3 | Vitalic - Poison Lips

Vitalic triumphant return is a tribute to his fans that make the clubs vibrate every time he is in town.
There's not a lot to say , he has a formula that a lot of copy cat dj's and producers try to use but there is only one vitalic , this record was made for is fans and to make sure that we dance our shoes off.

Amsterdam ??

Los Angeles-born artist Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life; this appreciation is nowhere more evident than in her work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up her intricate body of work.

McGrath’s work strives to communicate using similar means, yet her signifiers are vastly different. She draws inspiration from contemporary craft culture as well as her aforementioned Catholicism, Asian culture, street culture, Goth culture, Chicano culture, storybooks, theme parks, and too many other influences to note. She digests all of them and creates her own environments in which she may stage dramas and create scenarios that draw upon her own experiences and interactions with the outside world. If you examine her work closely, you might come to the realization that her creatures are really all self portraits, set in a fantastical landscape which echoes her own… a bitter, yet sweetly coated prescription for modern life. Elizabeth McGrath

A project of Audiochmura (Audiocloud) was inspired by the concept of Audioarchitektura (Sonicarchitecture) – brainchild of artist Piotr Adamski and mode:lina. It is a sonic installation using corrugated pipes as amplifiers emitting sounds gathered around its actual position. The shape of a cloud relates to something ephemeral, almost non-existent and likely to move.

Invisible Sonic-buildings, spread along the sidewalks, in parks and boulevards, emitting sound waves that drown out the city noise. Passer-by walking in their range are surrounded by the sound of hypnotic composition of Steve Reich’s concert, broadcasted live from the concert hall or a melody of raindrops falling on the tin roofs of urban buildings. Today this is a utopian technology, but Sonic Architecture is also a basis for discussion on acoustic ecology, city’s acoustic landscape and its impact on the inhabitants. Audiochmura (Audiocloud)

This exclusive live / I A / MIX comes from Lusine. Lusine is the work of Seattle's finest electronic maestro Jeff Mcllwain. Jeff has been producing his visceral melodic abstract electronic music since graduating from CalArts in 1998, studying 20th Century music and sound design for music and film. 2009 celebrates his second release under Ann Arbour's most iconic label 'Ghostly International', 'A Certain Distance'.

'A Certain Distance' offers the listener a dynamic shift from Lusine's trademarked abstract less accessible tones. Ultimately it's a much more pop-y sound and accessible album. It's still largely abstract but warmer than his previous releases. 2004's 'Serial Hodgepodge' was essentially more clinical and un-worldly, of course it has its good tunes, but is unquestionably for the trained audiophile. 'A Certain Distance' has a wider range and varied character than the latter. IA will feature a full review on 'A Certain Distance' so keep your eyes peeled.

This mix was recorded live from Berlin's most notorious local haunt, Berghain. The mix predominantly features songs from 'A Certain Distance' most notably 'Double Vision' almost a soundtrack for transition, as if you're travelling away from the familiar bleak urban surroundings to a more tranquil landscape. Of course the highlights of the mix are the three untitled and entirely live tracks. The mix is only available from Inverted Audio for the next 3 weeks, so don't hang around, get it. Inverted Audio

My company, Strukt, realized this installation with the node-based programming language VVVV. We built this letter-universe to functioned as a soothing ambient visual but also created type-matrix pictures and fonts to feature the participants of “The design:project”, a competition hosted by Mercedes-Benz.

The real-time animation was screened on a 20 meter wide 3x-HD projection using only one computer to create the output signals. This system was later on also used to screen content during the award ceremony. For convenience we enabled OSC commands to control the letter-universe with the help of an iPod Touch.

Leaf records announces the forthcoming album of Sasu Ripatti (a.k.a. Vladislav Delay) called Tummaa ("Dark"), out on 24 August 2009.

Finnish composer Sasu Ripatti returns in late summer with Tummaa, his first album as Vladislav Delay since 2007’s Whistleblower. The new album marks a significant shift in emphasis in this acclaimed musician’s work, reflecting a renewed interest in jazz and acoustic performance: Tummaa is far more organic and live-sounding than anything he’s done before.

Ripatti is considered a genuine musical maverick; the devotion inspired by the depth, innovation and emotional volume of his music is passionate in the extreme. While he has largely shunned the limelight since emerging as a producer in Helsinki in the late 90s, his prolific output (as Delay, Luomo and Uusitalo, as well as collaborations with partner Antye Greie (AGF)) speaks for itself.

His accomplishments include collaborations with a vast array of musicians and singers such as Craig Armstrong, Black Dice, Massive Attack, Towa Tei, Jake Shears, Robert Owens and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Since returning to live in Finland in 2008 after seven years in Berlin, Sasu Ripatti has begun to emerge more fully as the identity behind this decade of fascinating, although somewhat clandestine endeavours, coinciding with a return to Ripatti’s first love of performing as a percussionist.

With a wide range of experience with record labels throughout his career (from major labels with the Luomo project and the cream of the underground via Mille Plateaux, Chain Reaction, Force Tracks, and BPitch Control among many), Ripatti has for the last five years released works on his own Huume label. So it’s with great pride that long-time admirers The Leaf Label welcome Ripatti for his landmark latest release as Vladislav Delay. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Sasu Ripatti story.
“I wanted to take a new direction with Vladislav Delay, with more acoustic sound sources,” he explains. “I avoided as much electronics as possible, wanting to bring myself closer to my background as a drummer and percussionist.”Leaf

In conjunction with the launch of Adobe's CS3, this interactive mural installation was designed by Brand New School for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco. Using some fairly sophisticated programming and tracking hardware, peoples' movements are recorded and translated into an animated mixed-media mural that reflects the creative license afforded by the new Adobe CS3 software package. My Secret Heart is a music and film installation & performance commissioned by Streetwise Opera with music composed by Mira Calix and sound design by David Sheppard. Working with video artists Flat-e, we created a film to accompany the 48 minute performance, as well as versions for an installation and short film.

Streetwise Opera are a charity who use music as a tool to help people who have experienced homelessness move forward in their lives. They run a weekly music programme, resident in 10 homeless centres around the country - and also stage an annual production which gives their performers the chance to star in quality shows where there are high-expectations, no compromise and no patronising. The voices you hear in the music, and people you see in the film, are from Streetwise workshops around the UK. 100+ Streetwise performers also sang at the My Secret Heart premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in December 2008. My Secret Heart is about their story.

If every space is unique, why not every piece of furniture? In introducing OnSiteOO, designer Sebastien Wierinck takes a systematic approach to this philosophy. Using industrial tubing normally found only at building sites, he crafts robust seating elements featuring complex forms. These are standard objects that assume their definitive form only on site, as the name suggests, and are thus 'programmed' for use on the street or in the exhibition space. They are comfortable spatial compositions, motionless choreography, if you will: functional objects that make their presence known and leave the observer wondering whether the maker is an artist or a furniture designer. The Social Collider reveals cross-connections between conversations on Twitter.
With the Internet's promise of instant and absolute connectedness, two things appear to be curiously underrepresented: both temporal and lateral perspective of our data-trails. Yet, the amount of data we are constantly producing provides a whole world of contexts, many of which can reveal astonishing relationships if only looked at through time.

This experiment explores these possibilities by starting with messages on the microblogging-platform Twitter. One can search for usernames or topics, which are tracked through time and visualized much like the way a particle collider draws pictures of subatomic matter. Posts that didn't resonate with anyone just connect to the next item in the stream. The ones that did, however, spin off and horizontally link to users or topics who relate to them, either directly or in terms of their content.

The Social Collider acts as a metaphorical instrument which can be used to make visible how memes get created and how they propagate. Ideally, it might catch the Zeitgeist at work.

You can read more about the project here.

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate. The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being. For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film. It was a twist of fate that brought about Modeselektor and Apparat’s reunion in the spring of 2008. Szary and Bronsert, both proud fathers, were on their way to the "Stadtbad Mitte" (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) with their children for their regular Monday swimming lessons when they ran into Ring, a devout bachelor who happened to be accompanied by several dubious females. After a battering of verbal abuse, the three gentlemen quickly made peace and decided to get back to work on their collaborative album post haste. Thus, Moderat was reformed.

In recording Moderat’s self-titled album, the three men began by renting studio space at the legendary Berlin Hansa Studios (where Bowie recorded Heroes) in order to record the album in analog with the help of the studio’s vintage tube technology and an old EMI console from 1972, restored especially for Moderat. American software designer, Joshua Kit Clayton, was hired to program a superb reverb algorithm s! pecifically for the recording process of this album. This exquisite sound design is one of the reasons why the promotional copies can be listened to only in mono. Finished copies will, of course, be in full stereo.Bpitch

The Disposable Film Festival was created in 2007 to celebrate the artistic potential of disposable video: short films made on non-professional devices such as one-time use video cameras, cell phones, point and shoot cameras, webcams, computer screen capture software, and other readily available video capture devices. With people everywhere posting videos online, we felt the time was right to draw attention to the creative potential of this new mode of filmmaking. Far beyond its initial roles for video blogging and documentation, the DFF offers a forum to display how disposable media can be used for creative purposes. The DFF hosts screenings, competitions, and other events to showcase the best work within the disposable genre.
