Los Angeles-born artist Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life; this appreciation is nowhere more evident than in her work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up her intricate body of work.

McGrath’s work strives to communicate using similar means, yet her signifiers are vastly different. She draws inspiration from contemporary craft culture as well as her aforementioned Catholicism, Asian culture, street culture, Goth culture, Chicano culture, storybooks, theme parks, and too many other influences to note. She digests all of them and creates her own environments in which she may stage dramas and create scenarios that draw upon her own experiences and interactions with the outside world. If you examine her work closely, you might come to the realization that her creatures are really all self portraits, set in a fantastical landscape which echoes her own… a bitter, yet sweetly coated prescription for modern life. Elizabeth McGrath

A project of Audiochmura (Audiocloud) was inspired by the concept of Audioarchitektura (Sonicarchitecture) – brainchild of artist Piotr Adamski and mode:lina. It is a sonic installation using corrugated pipes as amplifiers emitting sounds gathered around its actual position. The shape of a cloud relates to something ephemeral, almost non-existent and likely to move.

Invisible Sonic-buildings, spread along the sidewalks, in parks and boulevards, emitting sound waves that drown out the city noise. Passer-by walking in their range are surrounded by the sound of hypnotic composition of Steve Reich’s concert, broadcasted live from the concert hall or a melody of raindrops falling on the tin roofs of urban buildings. Today this is a utopian technology, but Sonic Architecture is also a basis for discussion on acoustic ecology, city’s acoustic landscape and its impact on the inhabitants. Audiochmura (Audiocloud)

This exclusive live / I A / MIX comes from Lusine. Lusine is the work of Seattle's finest electronic maestro Jeff Mcllwain. Jeff has been producing his visceral melodic abstract electronic music since graduating from CalArts in 1998, studying 20th Century music and sound design for music and film. 2009 celebrates his second release under Ann Arbour's most iconic label 'Ghostly International', 'A Certain Distance'.

'A Certain Distance' offers the listener a dynamic shift from Lusine's trademarked abstract less accessible tones. Ultimately it's a much more pop-y sound and accessible album. It's still largely abstract but warmer than his previous releases. 2004's 'Serial Hodgepodge' was essentially more clinical and un-worldly, of course it has its good tunes, but is unquestionably for the trained audiophile. 'A Certain Distance' has a wider range and varied character than the latter. IA will feature a full review on 'A Certain Distance' so keep your eyes peeled.

This mix was recorded live from Berlin's most notorious local haunt, Berghain. The mix predominantly features songs from 'A Certain Distance' most notably 'Double Vision' almost a soundtrack for transition, as if you're travelling away from the familiar bleak urban surroundings to a more tranquil landscape. Of course the highlights of the mix are the three untitled and entirely live tracks. The mix is only available from Inverted Audio for the next 3 weeks, so don't hang around, get it. Inverted Audio

Man on Wire,The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello,From Inside, Igor, Polymath, Munk,Who Made Who,Paul Kalkbrenner, Bon Iver,Circlesquare

On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York's twin towers, then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released.

Following six and a half years of dreaming of the towers, Petit spent eight months in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC's security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan...

James Marsh's documentary brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Philippe himself, and some of the co-conspirators who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as "the artistic crime of the century."

Nominated for an Oscar and for a BAFTA award, Jasper Morello is a short feature made in a unique style of silhouette animation developed by director Anthony Lucas and inspired by the work of authors Edgar Alan Poe and Jules Verne. In the frontier city of Carpathia, Jasper Morello discovers that his former adversary Doctor Claude Belgon has returned from the grave. When Claude reveals that he knows the location of the ancient city of Alto Mea where the secrets of life have been discovered, Jasper cannot resist the temptation to bring his own dead wife Amelia back. But they are captured by Armand Forgette, leader of the radical Horizontalist anti-technology movement, who is determined to reanimate his terrorist father Vasco. As lightning energises the arcane machineries of life in the floating castle of Alto Mea, Jasper must choose between having his beloved restored or seeing the government of Gothia destroyed. Set in a world of iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, this gothic horror mystery tells the story of Jasper Morello, a disgraced aerial navigator who flees his Plague-ridden home on a desperate voyage to redeem himself.

Best of 2008,Remote,Our Sleepless Forest, Deerhunter,Fennesz, Arnaud Rebotini,Fuck Buttons, Munk, Duchess Says,Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker ,Kap Bambino

This week i was asked by Hype Machine to vote on my top 10 records of 2008.
this will be a hard and difficult exercise but i have a pretty good idea of a few of them . Its difficult because i normally listen to so many different styles of music , and to pick 10 , well its hard .

The order of the records is not importante , all this records have the same importance and impact throught out this year.

Remote
" Dark Enough " - Kill the Dj
Techno / Minimal / Electro / Electronic
Buy

From the beginning of the year that i new that this record had it all , thought i'm absolutely not a fan of techno , this is a really great crossover of techno and electro. Its dark , muscled and always on heavy rotation on my gym play lists.

I'm also a big fan of French Electro , i've start loving the whole thing listening to the Black Strobe , and this records as loads of it , that dark matter that i like so much on electro.

Mp3 | Remote - Veron

Our Sleepless Forest
" Our Sleepless Forest " - Resonant
Experimental / Post-Rock / Drone / Ambient
Buy

What a majestic record from this South London trio, it simply has to be heard.
I know is always unfair to compare records and artist , but the reason that made me like this record immediately , was is resemblance to Ben Frost "Theory of Machines" , it was like finally something as powerful had came out.

Its almost breathtaking , you could almost get lost in its complexity , "Clarion" its just beautiful , Drones and Experimental Post-Rock . "The Tinderbox" , apparently and easy and appealing tracks that at some point stops , you think the track as came to the end , and them starts this ravishing drone with sounds of landscapes filled with water sounds and exotic creatures. Its a must have.

Mp3 | Our Sleepless Forest - The Clarion

Sadly this was the last release of a great record label Resonant

Deerhunter
" Microcastle " - Kranky
Alternative / Indie
Buy

Mr. Cox had a very busy year , 3 records under is belt , " Microcastle " is definitely my favorite , in is other project Atlas Sound , Mr. Cox brought us another well crafted and excellent record " Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel "

" Nothing Ever Happened " , " Agoraphobia " and " Never Stops " are masterpieces in a all together a brilliant record.

Mp3 | Deerhunter - Agoraphobia

Fennesz
" Black Sea " - Touch
Ambient / Modern Classical / Drone
Buy

2008 saw the consolidation of Christian Fennesz on my top 10 favorite artist.
First because this year finally i had my ears on his collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto , its tremendous " Cender " , probably my favorite record at this moment.

Second because " Black Sea " new album out now on Touch Records, its just miraculous beautiful . normally i can do a lot of things at the same time , but with this , no . while i'm listening to is drones and acoustics all looped out is a calm and relaxing ambient , i think i'm nearly in a state of trance looking to a painting i have above my couch , i just steer at it numbly , even if the whole world was collapsing around me , i wouldn't fell a thing.
" Grey Scale " and " Perfume For Winter " are some of the most beautiful and profoundly tracks i've heard from Fennesz.

Mp3 | Fennesz - Grey Scale

Arnaud Rebotini
" Music Components " - Citizen
Electro / Techno
Buy

There was a lot of nasty talk about the Black Strobe split up , the reviews about the 2007 " Burn you own Church " were quite poor . To be honest , i don't listen to that kinda of stuff , i liked the record a lot , and the reasons that lead Ivan Smagghe to leap out because he wanted to focus more on his Dj Career are very valid.
The thing is , the Black Strobe are something very special their sound is unique and very appealing to me. Ever since i heard " Me and Madonna " for the first time , my world change a lot and my music tastes had to evolve into things that i didn't like a lot

Arnaud Rebotini , new solo record " Music Components " is very good , i can't say its awesome because the surprise element is not there anymore , but it doesn't invalidate being a very good record , and when comes to electro , Rebotini knows it all.

Mp3 | Rebotini -1314

Fuck Buttons
" Street Horrrsing " - ATP
Noise / Drone / Experimental
Buy

There was a lot of talk about Fuck Buttons , i saw them live and give them a 10/10
As for the record , leaps out on all the boundaries and extensions of what is permitted and allowed in music these days . Fuck Buttons broke all these limits and produced a unique piece of wonderful and tribal noise record .

Mp3 | Fuck Buttons - Sweet Love For Planet

Munk
" Cloudbuster " - Gomma
Krautdisco / Future Disco / Electro Funk
Buy

Gomma is one of my favorite record labels , and also one of the most underestimated in Europe , they are also known as the DFA of Europe , because of there inflamed disco beats .
Release after release , they always bring something fresh , this time was Munk's " Cloudbuster " with some fabulous spaced disco/funk .

The super " Psychomagic " and the smashing " live fast! die old! " feat. Asia Argento made Munk catapult and shows us some of their Gomma glamour.

Mp3 | Munk - Psychomagic

Duchess Says
" Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs " - Alien8
Punk-Rock / Alternative
Buy

They are Canadians and they make shit loads of noise , one the best Punk/Rock records of these year.

Rough bass lines , screaming guitars and heavy pounding drumming , add this to the screams of their sexy vocalist Annie-C and you get an explosive mix that will raise all you hidden hairs to hysteria.

Mp3 | Duchess Says - La friche

Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker
" Fantasma Parastasie " - Alien8
Drone / Ambient / Experimental
Buy

2008 i believed to be the year of the drone , it's something very recent to my ears.
Tim Hecker and Aidan Baker are recent addiction to my Audiopleasures world.
" Fantasma Parastasie " joins Nadja’s Aidan Baker and fellow Canadian Tim Hecker in their first collaboration on Alien8.
Both Canadian artist are exponents in the art of abstract and experimental music , while Tim Hecker explores the more ambient part of the compositions , Aidan Baker takes is darker backgrounds with distortion and noise.
If you like this combinations and enjoy experimental music , this a must have record.

Mp3 | Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker - hymn to the idea of night

Kap Bambino
" zero life night vision " - Alt+Delee
Electro / Punk / 8-Bit / Nu-Rave
Buy

Either you love or you hate it , there is no halve term on this record .

Its intoxicating and energetic to the bone , the beats are unreal hard , nu-rave mixed with 8-bit , electro and very punky attitude.
I give them my vote because of their courage and the freshness of the record , if you listen to it , put on your party gears and rock on.

Mp3 | Kap Bambino - Night Vision Ocean

Other records that deserve to be mentioned.

Flying Lotus - " Los Angeles " - Warp
Ezekiel Honig - " Surfaces of a Broken Marching Band " - Anticipate
Kangding Ray - " Automne Fold " - Raster-Noton
Cloudland Canyon - " Lie in Light " - Kranky
M83 - " Saturdays=Youth " - Mute
Padded Cell - " Night Must Fall " - Dc Recordings
MIT - " Coda " - Haute Areal
Tindersticks - " The Hungry Saw " - Beggars
These New Puritans - " Beat Pyramid " - Domino
Atlas Sound - " Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel " - Kranky

this could go on and on and on , appologise for those i forgot . Funny thing , normaly the best albums are those you will only discover next year.

First edition AAF Amsterdam big success

The first edition of the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdamdrew more than 9000 visitors and galleries sold for more than €1.2 million worth of art. With those numbers the first AAF Amsterdam can be called a success. Visitors are charmed by the AAF concept, that different, energetic atmosphere and the inspiring diversity of galleries.

Exhibiting galleries are most happy with the affluence of a young, enthusiastic public that doesn't hesitate long before going over to acquisition. ‘Again next year!' was what the organisers heard time and again. “The atmosphere was really terriffic!” , wrote Petra Leene, Kunst aan de Amstel Gallery. Galleries that partake in several fairs each year, call the character of the Affordable Art Fair unique. “The most fun fair to date, and I've done many fairs this year!” , was Gallery Noordeinde's comment.

AAF Amsterdam 2008: 30 October till 2 November 2008

After eight successful years in London, New York, Sydney and Melbourne the Affordable Art Fair has been launched in Amsterdam in November 2007. After this first edition the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam will grow in 2008: circa 80 galleries from the Netherlands and abroad will be seen at the Westergasfabriek terrain from 29 October to 2 November. The fair is fun, relaxed and with everything from €100 to €5,000, it is an art-buying opportunity that can not be missed.

The fair's friendly environment invites first time buyers to browse amongst the thousands of paintings, original prints, photography and sculpture, whilst seasoned collectors can seek out hot new artists. In short, AAF Amsterdam is a fair where you can look at contemporary art, love it and leave with your own piece.

This funky fair's stunning location is the 19th century gasworks, an impressive industrial monument on the Westergasfabriek terrain, close to Amsterdam Central station and easy to reach by bike, tram, car or foot from the town center.

Free workshops about art techniques will take place throughout the event. All ages are catered for with our wine bar, café and children's crèche making it a great place to meet up with friends or to bring the family.

On Wednesday November 5 the twelfth edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival kicks off with the impressive animated documentary Waltz with Bashir of Ari Folman and the world premiere of Thee Wreckers: No Place Like Home directed by Dutch animation director Rosto.

Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations, attends HAFF as the Guest of Honour. He has compiled a special Aardman retrospective. The master will personally introduce the Aardman sections. They obviously include the famous Wallace & Gromit, but there is a lot more where that came from. In addition Peter Lord presents a programme at the festival featuring his personal animated favourites, covering almost one century of animation: from Willis O’Brien’s Prehistoric Poultry (1916) to Matthew Walker’s Astronauts (2005).

The whole selection of films, the special programmes, the international juryies and their competitions, the master classes and talk shows with hosts Paul Wells and Pierre Floquet, the workshops with open source software Blender, the Aardman retrospective, the hilarious festival leader directed by HAFF 2002 Grand Prix-winner Pete Bishop, the poster designed by jury member Richard McGuire, the Oscar winning Peter and the Wolf by jury member Suzie Templeton, the public animated installation Intra Muros by artist Rose Bond at the windows of the city hall and info of all films in the programme and the Audience Award Dutch Animation, the debate about the cross pollination between games and animation and so much more ….

Defasten believes in remodernist ideals and the nihilist difference of our alleged unified society. In the future, the alphabet does not exist.

Focusing on digital animation, Defasten delineates parallels within information, space, and the urban landscape at the intersection of digital media practices. This direction reflects an interest in the fragmentation of media, contemporary society, and the post-modern condition.

"L'amie De Zoé " is an animated short story about friendship. Life in Zoé's world is green and ordinary. When a red family unexpectedly lands on her planet, Zoé makes a new friend. While teaching her friend, Maho, all about her world, Zoé realizes that being green is not ordinary to everyone.

Working closely with illustrator Matthieu Roussel, MAKE created a wonderous moving world from Roussel's book "L'amie de Zoé". By bringing Zoé's green world from the page to the screen, the team at MAKE were able to add layers of interactions and emotions not achievable in printed form. Even the planet itself becomes a character. It affects the characters' lives and behaviours. Using Roussel's book and vision, MAKE brought "L'amie de Zoé" to life.
