The early evening darkness had already descended on Austin when Juliette Lewis and her new band, the New Romantics arrived at Big Orange during the Friday night hours of the South By Southwest music festival in March. Lewis looked modestly fatigued, with an over-sized sun hat on, a short-cut belly shirt and jeans – nothing of which was synchronized by color or style – and it couldn’t have been a more fitting combination of attire for the free form, cultishly worshipped actress/musician. She informed us that she’d just begun to drink Guinness and after a long day of performing and press behind her new ensemble, the New Romantics, she was in need of some thick, brown beer spirits. There was no Guinness in the studio so she sought stuff out across the street at The Scoot Inn, where an official showcase was already underway in the dive-y environs.

Kams , shrieker Rachel-Mary Callaghan sounds like the sort of person you wouldn't leave any of your loved ones alone with - sons or daughters, family pets, sweethearts or cherished elders. Most foolhardy of all would be to pair her up with your father, but that's what the lyrics to "Male Bonding" demand: to dance with daddy, to drugs with daddy, to bed with daddy, all to a vicious backbeat of post-punkish drums and guitar stabs, both of which are played by former Test Icicle Rory Atwell. The London quartet's debut album Spayed is full of such heart-shattering threats and is out now. Rcrdlbl

Tina Frank is a »visual artist« – her name is internationally known as a synonym for experimental design as well as visualisations of music/for music.
Her roots are in cover designs for electronic music label Mego during the mid 1990's when she also started to work with digital realtime-visualisation, video & multimedia. Taschen Books listed Tina Frank in their book Graphic Design for the 21st Century among the top 100 graphic designers worldwide.
Performances and contributions to exhibitions, such as Ars Electronica, Linz; Centre Pompidou, Paris; or ICC, Tokyo, and many interviews in magazines are evidence of Tina Frank’s activities as a design and video artist.
The video chronomops received first prize in 2006 at »diagonale 06« for best innovative, experimental-, animation- or shortfilm 2005/2006

Watch | Chronomops

The doors of perception, electronic style. Tina Frank’s Chronomops opens doors to truly different dimensions: different than digital art’s reductionist studies so common today, different than the serially laid out minimalist images, and different than the omnipresent filtering and layering experiments. Chronomops opens up a shimmering, colorful space that is simultaneously an excess of color, frenzy of perception, and pop carousel. An abstract architecture of vertical color bars is set in endless rotation, whereby the modules and building blocks fly around themselves—and the entire system likewise rotates. The forced movement forms a digital maelstrom whose suction pulls the observer deep into it. Sixpacfilm

Watch | Aus

audio: Christian Fennesz , production: Mego , video: Skot

Irritation and layovers are the main technical aspects within »Aus«. Scratches and the graininess of the found footage (Super 8 film) are heavily exposed and emphasised. This can be seen within some kind of plastic ’extensibility’ or ’liquefaction’ of old movies by means of computers. The images are rhythmized along with the music moving forward and backward in single frames like being “scratched”.

It is important that one can see the framing and the projection itself; the possible manipulation und fragility of the chosen movies are central, fitting perfectly to the slightly melancholic music. In this way the video tells of saying goodbye: of memories and untroubled quality of the material, in the end of »old« media and its representation of the world.

¬ about skot
Mathias Gmachl and Tina Frank started collaborating under the name of Skot in 1997. “Playing and working with recorded visual material on the basis of live sampling and live construction of new forms of visual media” was their aim. Skot is no longer active since 2000

Miss Kittin (Caroline Hervé) & The Hacker (Michel Amato). Individually, as writers, artists, Djs and producers they are impressive. On the brand new album, "Two", together again as a duo, they are unrivalled.
It's been far too long since the release of their era-defining classic "1st Album", but wait no more, dear music lover, for they are back with a bang. And you'd better believe, it's a big, cosmic "bang".
"1000 Dreams" reflects just one style on an album crammed full of ideas, songs, sounds, influences, hues and textures.

Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.

The first ghost bikes were created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003, and they have since appeared in over 80 cities throughout the world. For those who create and install the memorials, the death of a fellow bicyclist hits home. We all travel the same unsafe streets and face the same risks; it could just as easily be any one of us. Each time we say we hope to never have to do it again -- but we remain committed to making these memorials as long as they are needed.

A free and popular event
The musicians are asked to perform for free, and all the concerts are free for the public. It’s the reason why they are used to play in open air areas as streets and parks or in public buildings like museums, train stations, castles… Furthermore, the Fête de la Musique is a way to encourage the major music institutions (orchestra, operas, choirs, etc.) to perform outside their usual locations. This kind of institutions can also welcome other types of music. In this way it offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between city centres and their outlying areas, to offer concerts in hospitals or in prisons, to promote encounters and exchanges between young musicians and well-known talents.

Human-generated electromagnetic waves are traveling over, around and through us all the time. Wifi, cellphones, radio, and television broadcast all create electromagnetic fields that are 'loud' compared to the natural background, but imperceptible to the human senses. This invisible world is alive with activity that directly reflects our growing relationship to and dependence on, technology.

With specialized devices sensitive to changes in electromagnetic fields, detected changes are converted into electrical signals and a unique landscape of sound and structure is slowly uncovered. Snarling wires pulsate and grow in wild masses, cellular-like forms explode as bit torrents download files, and subtle reeds dance and dangle as cellular phone signals cross the room.

Precare is operating as an intermediator between property-owners of temporary vacant premises and artistic or social initiatives in need of workspace.
Since its origin PRECARE has been opening forteen buildings - for a period of six months to five years - and providing over a hunderd initiatives with a workspace.

Due to this success Precare is now also starting up in London, Barcelona and Milan.

Precare is a simple and efficient instrument to strengthen urban creative initiatives by reusing abandoned buildings as workspaces. PRECARE facilitates the 'intermediary use' of abandoned buildings. It not only provides a solution for the need for workspaces in the creative sector, it also creates a positive dynamic in neighbourhoods suffering from abandoned real estate.

After a first phase of informal support, (1999 - 2003 ), and a second more systematic laboratory phase in which instruments were designed, tested and disseminated ( 2003 - 2005 ), Precare has been working in a structural way on the actual use of a series of creative workspaces in empty buildings for almost two years. Saturday , with some courage left the house still struggling with all that vodka from the night before , Kayyi my friend from Canada that came for a few days to Amsterdam , we went for a stroll in The Nine Streets and found a lot of interesting things.

The London Police, 10 years later @ Go Gallery
The London Police will showcase their latest works at the GO Gallery on the 16th of May, 2009.
TLP began in 1998, when 2 Britsh geezers came to Amsterdam to cheer up the capital city, with their aerosol antics. Very soon "LADs" began to appear all over the Amsterdam, on Fuse boxes, scaffoldings and such.
Not only in Amsterdam did the "LADs" come to life. For the last 10 years, TLP has participated in exhibitions in 35 countries and been part of shows all over the globe with murals, pieces and various charitable activities. Their largest mural can still be seen in Kreuzberg, Berlin, on a 6 storey building. In Tiblisi, Georgia, they painted an orphanage along with the Hope Box. ( http://www.hopebox.nl/) A similar project has been planned in Kosovo. A couple of years ago, the TLP had a show in China for dogs. The paintings were exhibited at knee level complete with a collection of doggie clothing and toys.

Two of the founding members of the TLP, Chaz and Bob did a solo stint for a number of years, and since 2008 have made a re-combined effort with their individual talents and hence the show, which will travel the world over: The London Police, 10 years later.
After the first solo show at a very popular London Gallery, the GO Gallery is next in line to showcase the duos latest collection of artworks. Circa 10spectacular works combining the efforts of both artists will be on display at the Gallery on the Prinsengracht.
The Project "Every 20 minutes- a week long" , a photographic project which will also be on view during this show.

Preview:Friday evening until 8.00 pm.
Opening: Saturday, May 16th 2009,5.00 and 8.00 pm.
The show will be on diplay until the 21st of June.

Bioshock - Artists Anonymous @ Ron Mandos Gallery

Encroaching into every inch of the 350 square meter Galerie Ron Mandos, this latest installation will consist of an array of different surreal scenes: a wild wood, an overgrown garden, a down ‘n out cabaret, a surreal beach dinner setting. Each ‘room’ will be constructed from different technologies and media, combining personal details, art-historical references, internet and computer game imagery to create an other-worldy and unsettling environment where all is not quite what it seems. The collective’s newly created paintings, photographs and light-boxes will be seamlessly incorporated into these locations, forming points of visual interest within this sinister spectacle.

The ‘Bio-Shock’ installation directly references and comments on the artificial realities we increasingly inhabit today. Staged as a microcosm of chat rooms, social networking sites, computer games and even fantasy novels, the installation directly reflects and comments on these artificial locations that increasingly provide the context for our fulfillment and triumphs as human beings and to whose rules, conventions and boundaries we are more than willing to subjugate ourselves to.

Lftfld , As a collective we aim to promote Amsterdam cultural (night)life by publishing a montly magazine (LFTFLD Magazine), organizing events and parties on a regular base and broadcasting a local television programme called LFTFLD TV. With these means we focus on the more 'leftfieldish' artists, organisations or initiatives of Amsterdam. For this we were rewarded with (translated) the Amsterdam Night Culture Award, an award initiated by Amsterdam Dance Event and the 'Nachtwacht' (which is the official collective of Amsterdam Night Mayors).
