"Erik Satie et les nouveaux jeunes"

"It was expected that arbouse Recordings label, party over ten years the discovery through the world of music news, come to look to Erik Satie this precursor. As such, Cyril Caucat (label founder) approached Ornella Volta Chair of Archives Erik Satie (Paris). Since 2000 took place between Paris and Rodez an exchange of letters that eventually leads to disc as a tribute to composer. 'Les nouveaux jeunes' from all corners of the world (Chicago, New York Stockholm Berlin, London, Paris ...) will be heard through their music of Erik Satie news .. . Without forget the other side of modernity: its humor seriously. It was actually 'Esoterik' provided that 'Satierik'. Just to play with Satie recordings arbutus appealed to Illegal, a organization dark and full of mockery in the words of a journalist.
"Erik Satie et les nouveaux jeunes" is a disc-shaped tribute to composer Erik Satie (formerly pressure "les nouveaux jeunes" is Erik Satie used for these contemporaries such as Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc (school's of six). A number of international musicians today were asked to rework directory Satie, propose designs or re-interpretations." Arbouse Recordings

Julia Kent – Green and Grey

The wonderful Canadian born and New York based cellist Julia Kent as released a new album, Green and Grey is a stunning piece of looped cello, field recordings, and electronics

Green and Grey is the follow up from the wonderful solo debut "Delay". Delay was about traveling and the hours Julia spend in between airports, Green and Grey expresses the link between the natural world and the human-created world.

One of my favorite albums of 2011 and Higly Recomended to all fans of Modern Classical and layered Cello.

Los Angeles 1999 D- Hastie and Simon "Woolfy" James meet in a run down bar in downtown LA ..a pint? aayy a pint will do fine .. you make music , I make music , let's make music .. The two embarked on what's become an eight year adventure.
Their first release on Chicago's Guidance Recordings was Kingsburg , a track that's appeared on many compilations , including house legend Tony Humphries at Fabric. From there, the full length , Between Here & Now was released , which made serious waves on the electronic scene and put Projections on the map. The lads have become well known in Los Angeles for their knock down drag 'em out parties. Dropping a concoction of spaced-out house , dubbed disco , funk & beard rock. the dancefloors last forever. As well as Dj'ing , Projections keeps busy in many other projects such as the disco-rocker outfit Woolfy on Rong Records (NY) , and the supa heavy funk band Orgone on Ubiquity / Nuff Rope Records (CA/UK). Projections and Woolfy has recently released 12"s on Rong , which received heavy rotation by DFA frontman James Murphy and all the other bearded disco warriors. They also produced a remix for LCD Soundsytem together with dj harvey for their latest single all my friends.

Calder
" Lower " - Make Mine Music - 2008
Ambient / Drone / Post-Rock
Buy

Olafur and Larus met by chance in iceland and exchanged some music before starting to improvise together on two electric guitars in the countryside of Iceland. The resault was the album Calder recorded on an analogue 4track tape machine. The album was self-released on Vogor Recordings in about 200 copies and sold at record stores in Reykjavik. In 2006 the UK based label Unlabel ddid release it officially as part of the it..s Series 52 and it was a limited release. Olafur and Larus have been working on new material on and off for the last 2-3 years, whenever they find time to meet up and record. In 2008 a new album is ready and will hopefully see it..s release worldwide late in 2008. The new material is more acoustically composed with mix of guitar drones and electronica.

Jacaszek
" Treny " - Miasmah - 2008
Electronica / Experimental / Classical
Buy

Marsen Jules, Arvo Part, Zbigniew Preisner's soundtrack work for Krzysztof Kieslowski, Deaf Center, Max Richter, Erik Satie, Alberto Iglesias - if you are familiar and in awe of any or all of these names then this latest album on the exceptional Miasmah label will no doubt end up on your essential listening pile for the foreseeable future. Jacaszek has managed with "Treny" to assemble an album so heart-stoppingly beautiful and personal that we've been stunned into silence for its entire 55 minute duration. With string arrangements provided courtesy of Stefan Wesolowski, the foundations of the album are set with Cello and Violin painting fragile outlines coloured by subtle electronic manipulations, harp, piano and reduced, haunting operatic voices. Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Michael Jacaszek doesn't make use of any samples, with everything on the album assembled by the musicians on hand (notably Maja Sieminska, Anja Smiszek-Wesolowska and Wesolowski and Jcaszek themselves) - and the subtle grandeur of the album is almost impossible to take in over one sitting, even if the impact is absolutely immediate.
We absolutely implore you to check this album out, one of the year's most important releases thus far. ESSENTIAL PURCHASE. Boomkat

Psychic Ills
" Dins " - The Social Registry - 2006
Psychedelic / Alternative / Experimental
Buy

The smirking paradox of almost all derivative music is that in a certain sense, the more you reference something, the easier it is to stand out or deviate from it. So when reaching for influences for Dins, the debut record from Brooklyn’s drone-rock up-and-comers Psychic Ills, it’s hard to reconcile the distinct stamp of Spacemen 3’s skuzzy ether or even My Bloody Valentine with Sonic Youth’s cavern of heavy petting and narcotics circa Evol; the former sounds are skyscrapers, the latter is a sewer, but both have a kind of stoned romanticism to them. Psychic Ills fall between, which makes a whole lot of sense: they’re a street-level band for street-level styles. Psychosexual Sonic Youth all of the sudden seems too murky and Spacemen 3 too religious to actually stalk the urban nocturne tints of Dins. Mike Powell

Vladislav Delay
" Demo(n) Tracks " - Huume - 2004
Electronic / Dub / Glitch
Buy

There’s rarely any stabilizing rhythmic anchor. Instead the music perpetually meanders and drifts, a fluid beatless reverie of abrasive, industrial noise. Awareness of Delay’s jazz drumming background helps one to grapple with the album’s rootless, restless style, as it unfolds much like an improvised free jazz session minus the grounding propulsiveness of a rhythm section and with electronics taking the place of acoustic instruments. Another aspect that lessens its accessibility is its lack of nucleus. There’s no central instrument to act as a unifying presence throughout and around which the other instruments might constellate, and its absence is alienating. The tracks are mercurial and amoebic, their shapes ever-shifting and unresolved, the sound impressionistic, hazy, aquatic, sprawling, and sketchy. Brief moments of gentle calm are leavened by clamouring blasts as the tracks develop unpredictably.Stylus

Julia Kent and Barbara De Dominicis are Intermittenze , a experimental performance , totally unique and extemporary . The main aspect of this " Act " its is open-ended nature , its unpredictability. Cello , Electronics and voice interact together experimenting a possible communication with the visual element.

This clip for Glaswegian band Mogwai is a sweet celebration of metamorphosis and the grotesquely beautiful.
A woman's tears run down across a table, through a child's loop the loop road set, and become little white globes of the earth, teapots, bottles, salt and pepper shakers.

Julia Kent Interview

Julia Kent left Rasputina in 1999, after releasing two albums on Columbia Records, and shortly thereafter became a member of Antony and the Johnsons. She played on and contributed string arrangements to the group’s Mercury Prize-winning record I Am a Bird Now, and, as a Johnson, has toured Europe, North America, and Australia; played at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall; and appeared on numerous television shows. In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony and the Johnsons, she also has performed and/or recorded with many other artists and ensembles, including the Angels of Light, Burnt Sugar, Larsen, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Mi and L’au, and Rufus Wainwright.

Her debut solo effort, Delay, is a cd of multitracked cello and found sounds. It was inspired by airports, by transitoriness, and by the private emotional worlds that we create amid the disorientations and disjunctions of travel.
Delay was recorded over the course of a year (or so) at home in between touring and traveling. After so many years of playing with other people Julia felt that it was time to do something entirely on her own. As a result she is the sole composer/performer on all tracks. The title refers to both the effect, to traveling and to the fact that it took so long to record. It is also an homage to Arthur Russell's World Of Echo – a masterpiece of (among other things) externalizing the intimate. Important Records

AP ) What does the Cello represents to you and why did you choose it as your reference instrument ?

JK )For me the cello is almost like a human voice: it has the same range and the same expressive possibilities. I think it offers interesting possibilities as a solo instrument, because of its range and because of the different textures you can create with it.

AP )What was the most bizarre thing , that you saw yourself involved in a airport ?

JK ( I always feel that I look a bit bizarre, with my cello and my mountain of luggage!

AP )Why did you choose these airport names ? are they special among so many others ?

JK ( They are all airports I have traveled through and I selected the names because the sound of them evoked certain things.

AP ) In songs like "Dorval" you can sense a much bigger approach to the classical than with "Tempelhof" , that suggests something much more aggressive and radical , how can you combine so different realms in your music ?

JK ( I'm interested in exploring as many different musical realms as possible, and I like the fact that the cello is capable of creating sounds that are quite aggressive, as in "Tempelhof."

AP ) You studied cello in a classical way , why did you decide to a much more alternative approach to exteriorize your relation with the cello ?

JK ( After studying classically I ended up playing in rock bands and in other nonclassical projects, which is how I ended up exploring the nontraditional side of the instrument.

AP ) You use a lot of pedals and samplers on your songs , why did you choose to use this equipment that normally is not asociated with a Cello solist ?

JK ( I like using effects in the same way that I think a guitar player might: to expand the sonic possibilities of the instrument and to create unexpected textures.

AP ) How did the specialized classical reviewers received your record ?

JK ( The only piece I saw from a classical reviewer was really perceptive and positive.

AP ) Where do you think "Delay" should be in a record store ? In a classical , Alternative or World Music area , and why ?

JK ( That's a very good question! I generally describe the music as "ambient." Certainly I don't think it qualifies as "classical" or "world music." Probably "alternative" is the most accurate category?

AP ) My favorite is "Barajas" , what could you tell about the creation of this particular piece ?

JK ( "Barajas" is named after the airport in Madrid, which is has a quite spectacular design. Musically, I was trying to create an agitated and cinematic atmosphere.

AP ) What does come to your mind with the name Antony and the Johnsons ?

JK ( I am very happy to be a Johnson!

AP ) What was it like to be involved in the process of recording such incredible beautiful songs with Antony ?

JK ( Antony is amazing: he is such a talented and beautiful person and I feel really lucky to have had the chance to work with him.

AP ) You have a long list of brilliant collaborations , Angels of Light, Larsen, Backworld, Jarboe, Devendra Banhart, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Rufus Wainwright , among many others , witch one was more rewarding and why ?

JK ( I always learn a lot through working with other people. I am always particularly enthusiastic to have the chance to do things with Michael Gira of Angels of Light--he is a brilliant producer.

AP ) After being been known in supporting roles , what does it feel like , being the star of the show and having half the world adoring your music ?

JK ( Oh my goodness, I so wish that were true! I have to say that with "Delay" I wanted to make something entirely by myself, and I have found it really empowering to have been able to do that.

AP ) Do you thing that was a big help for your solo carrier to have worked it so much famous people ? i suppose that is easier to promote your music , if your are associated as "Cello of Antony and the Johnsons" .

JK ( I think definitely it helped a bit, though I feel as though the audience for my solo music is pretty different.

AP ) You must have lots of wonderful memories of the times with Rasputina , could you share something special that happened during a tour ?

JK ( I have lots of memories, definitely! I did have a lot of fun touring with them, the most surreal experience being when we opened for Marilyn Manson and the audience threw various objects at us!

AP ) Why did you chose Shayo to release your debut album ?

JK ( Yann has been super supportive from the very beginning and he did an amazing job with the record in Europe. Important Records released it in North America.

AP ) Future plans , more collaborations and new solo album ?

JK ( I am working on a new solo album as we speak and talking to various people about collaborations.

AP ) Any plans to a visit the Netherlands soon , for a concert ?

JK ) I'd love to play in the Netherlands, but no immediate plans.

AP ) Pros and cons for bloggers ?

JK ( I feel as though bloggers have been really supportive of my record and I'm most grateful!
thank YOU very much!!!
