NIMk and DNK present launch of the Synchronator device

SYNCHRONATOR is an audiovisual project by Bas van Koolwijk and Gert-Jan Prins, for which the artists have developed their own electronics. The project is a continuation on medium specific experiments between image and sound from the early days of video art.
After the release of the first video in 2006, a DVD in 2009 and a range of international live performances, their SYNCHRONATOR device will now be presented during a festive opening at NIMK. The first edition is limited to one hundred numbered copies.

The SYNCHRONATOR device transforms your audio into a composite video signal, compatible with all video equipment supporting composite video input.

Next to a presentation of the SYNCHRONATOR and a performance by its creators, a video programme of related works from the NIMK collection will be shown.

Alexander Rodchenko - Revolution in Photography
Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam
18 December 2009 - 17 March 2010

Foam presents a unique retrospective of the world-famous Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko. The exhibition will contain more then 200 vintage photographs some of which have never been exhibited in the West before. Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) is one of the great innovators of twentieth-century avant-garde art and one of its most versatile practitioners. Having first gained international acclaim as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer, Rodchenko took up the practice of photography in the early 1920s, convinced that it would become the artistic medium of his era. Over the course of the following two decades he developed a bold new vocabulary of acute camera angles, extreme foreshortenings of perspective and close-ups of surprising details. In addition to introducing design as an integral element of photography, Rodchenko’s approach balanced formal concerns with an interest in documenting the social and political life of the Soviet Union. In the process, he helped to change the way people perceived not only photography, but also the role of the photographer. Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

No other living creature features as heavily in contemporary character design and art as the humble hare. But what exactly makes bunnies so irresistible to artists, designers and illustrators worldwide? Depending on the viewers' cultural context rabbits can symbolise anything from insanity, alertness, defencelessness, all the way to promiscuity, magic powers and utter innocence. By condensing the endless variations of the rabbit motif into one ultimate system - a perfect bunny mandala - the true nature of the beast emerges: the eternal essence of rabbit.

Pictoplasma (http://www.pictoplasma.com) asked internationally established and upcoming character designers, illustrators and artists around the globe to send in their versions of rabbits, bunnies, hares and everything in between. The result is a full-scale bunny overdose, with far more than 1.500 individual rabbits from 500+ international contributers. Visual Complexity

This site is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.

Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator and feel better” is something we often hear or read in the Sunday papers. Few people actually follow that advice. Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do? The Fun Theory

Paint a Future is a charity founded by the Dutch artist, Hetty van der Linden.
Hetty travels all over the world, painting with disadvantaged children. She tells them to paint their dreams and that the dreams they paint might one day come true.

Established and well-known artists from many different countries are inspired by the dreams the children paint, incorporating them into their own works of art. The paintings are sold and the proceeds go directly back to the child - helping to fulfill their dreams and create a better future for them and their families.

By purchasing a painting you are not only buying a work of art for your own investment and enjoyment, you are helping a child build a better future. Paint a Future

Los Angeles-born artist Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life; this appreciation is nowhere more evident than in her work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up her intricate body of work.

McGrath’s work strives to communicate using similar means, yet her signifiers are vastly different. She draws inspiration from contemporary craft culture as well as her aforementioned Catholicism, Asian culture, street culture, Goth culture, Chicano culture, storybooks, theme parks, and too many other influences to note. She digests all of them and creates her own environments in which she may stage dramas and create scenarios that draw upon her own experiences and interactions with the outside world. If you examine her work closely, you might come to the realization that her creatures are really all self portraits, set in a fantastical landscape which echoes her own… a bitter, yet sweetly coated prescription for modern life. A project of Audiochmura (Audiocloud) was inspired by the concept of Audioarchitektura (Sonicarchitecture) – brainchild of artist Piotr Adamski and mode:lina. It is a sonic installation using corrugated pipes as amplifiers emitting sounds gathered around its actual position. The shape of a cloud relates to something ephemeral, almost non-existent and likely to move.

Invisible Sonic-buildings, spread along the sidewalks, in parks and boulevards, emitting sound waves that drown out the city noise. Passer-by walking in their range are surrounded by the sound of hypnotic composition of Steve Reich’s concert, broadcasted live from the concert hall or a melody of raindrops falling on the tin roofs of urban buildings. Today this is a utopian technology, but Sonic Architecture is also a basis for discussion on acoustic ecology, city’s acoustic landscape and its impact on the inhabitants. Audiochmura (Audiocloud)

This exclusive live / I A / MIX comes from Lusine. Lusine is the work of Seattle's finest electronic maestro Jeff Mcllwain. Jeff has been producing his visceral melodic abstract electronic music since graduating from CalArts in 1998, studying 20th Century music and sound design for music and film. 2009 celebrates his second release under Ann Arbour's most iconic label 'Ghostly International', 'A Certain Distance'.

'A Certain Distance' offers the listener a dynamic shift from Lusine's trademarked abstract less accessible tones. Ultimately it's a much more pop-y sound and accessible album. It's still largely abstract but warmer than his previous releases. 2004's 'Serial Hodgepodge' was essentially more clinical and un-worldly, of course it has its good tunes, but is unquestionably for the trained audiophile. 'A Certain Distance' has a wider range and varied character than the latter. IA will feature a full review on 'A Certain Distance' so keep your eyes peeled.

This mix was recorded live from Berlin's most notorious local haunt, Berghain. The mix predominantly features songs from 'A Certain Distance' most notably 'Double Vision' almost a soundtrack for transition, as if you're travelling away from the familiar bleak urban surroundings to a more tranquil landscape. Of course the highlights of the mix are the three untitled and entirely live tracks. The mix is only available from Inverted Audio for the next 3 weeks, so don't hang around, get it. Inverted Audio

"Narrated by Academy Award® Winner Forest Whitaker, BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES is an unsettling and inspiring look at today’s popular music industry featuring interviews and performances by Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, ?uestlove and a wide variety of others. The documentary film has built a passionate following as “the most important film a music fan will ever see” (XM Radio) by providing “a balanced overview of the state of the rock scene of America” (The Wall Street Journal) and adding “passion to the eternal debate about the industry” (The New York Times). Last year, BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen walked away from traditional Hollywood distribution to instead pursue a large-scale grassroots release with B-Side Entertainment. Since its release in November 2006, the film has screened over 200 times in over 130 North American markets with hundreds of additional events anticipated worldwide during 2007. Use this site to learn more about the film, where you can see it, ways you can own it, and - most importantly - how you can get involved in sharing it with others."

In an effort to establish new platforms for public art and performance,
the multimedia duo SWEATSHOPPE has developed a new interactive technology that enables them to explore the relationship between video, mark making and architecture. Dubbed "video painting", this technology allows them to essentially "paint" video onto any surface. Shooting in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, the duo spent weeks documenting their work in urban settings to create "The Landing" the first in a series of episodes that showcases their work as artist, technologist and performers. This video shows 4 full uncut extra clips form the landing.

Alexander “Sandy” Calder—American printmaker, painter, sculptor, illustrator, and designer—revolutionized the art of sculpture by expressing movement with his invention of the “mobile,” a word coined in 1931 by Marcel Duchamp to describe Calder’s kinetic, and often whimsical, sculpture. The son and grandson of Philadelphia sculptors, Calder was trained as a mechanical engineer before studying at the Art Students League in New York, where he was a student of the urban realist painter John Sloane in 1923. Later inspired by the geometry and color employed by Spanish surrealist Joan Miró, whom he met in 1927, Calder began sculpting with continuous strands of wire that rendered volume without mass. Critics described these works as “drawings in space,” which later led to his “paintings in space”—constructions of abstract shapes cut from thin sheet metal and painted with primary colors. When attached to metal rods and suspended in midair, Calder’s “mobiles” hover and continuously shift with every air current. The flat, colorful shapes often resemble streamlined birds, fish, leaves, and stars, which adds an additional playful—and celestial—quality to Calder’s work. A major contribution to the development of abstract art, Calder’s floating compositions challenge the notion of sculpture as static compositions of mass and volume by focusing on the ideas of open space and transparency. uky

Amsterdam Dance Event , Golden Bug , Moulinex , Stateless , Bitterzoet , Patronaat

Last Thursday started the 14th edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event , the city was packet the clubs full , some of the biggest names of the industry come for a spin at Amsterdam , everyone was happy and gloomy.

Friday i went to Bitterzoet to listen to the Gomma crew and their recent created Gomma Dance Tracks.

One of their big names in the French Golden Bug , really cool live set , and it looked like everyone was having a blast.

One of my favorites is the super cool remix from the track "This Momentary" by Delphic.

Mp3 | Delphic - This Momentary [ Golden Bug remix ]

Moulinex had a very cool start , very disco , cool groves quite impressive , last part was a big complicated and we lost a bit of interest.

Mp3 | Cut Copy - Lights and Music [ Moulinex remix ]

In a general was a good choice and Bitterzoet is recommended for other trips to Amsterdam.

Saturday was the Leeds band Stateless (K7 Records) @ Patronaat , they are in a mini acoustic tour in Holland, i don't think that the partonaat cafe is the most adequate , at same point the crowd voice level combined with some dodgy feed back was so high that we nearly couldn't listen to the great combined voices of Chris James and Justin Percival . The performance was very nice , really liked the drummer David Levin , the guy was having lots of fun and definitely gave an extra to the band performance.
"Bloodstream" one my fav tracks was nearly audible and was a bit of a shame because its such a great song and super lyrics , " Wake up look me in the eyes again , I need to feel your hand upon my face ".
After the concert had time for a few pics a bit chat , i was told that they are preparing a new release around March and that will be a bit more electronic and experimental.

As a tip for the Patronaat , on this tipe of more acoustic performances , maybe a bit more care preparing the room , was a real pity and i thing the guys deserved a bit more.

Stateless give away a free download of an exclusive new acoustic track called Wade In.

“Inochi” Figures

Takashi Murakami is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media, such as painting, as well as digital and commercial media. He blurs the boundaries between high and low art. He appropriates popular themes from mass media and pop culture, then turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines.
