"Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra "
Get Physical - 2008
Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra sees Raz’s potential fully realized - a taut, coherent suite of eleven songs at once world-weary and full of wonder, given wings by the subtle embellishments of The Odd Orchestra – aka Raz’s friend and collaborator Oliver Doerell. Oliver has released albums as Dictaphone and Swod on highly respected electronica imprint City Centre Offices, and has toured the world with both these projects. For Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra, he and Raz exchanged song-sketches over a long period of time to hone the album’s unique sound. This album will appeal not just to those who value classy production and electronics, but also those with a penchant for sophisticated, original and timeless pop music.

Michael J. Schumacher is a composer, performer and installation artist based in New York City.

He works predominantly with electronic and digital media, specializing in computer generated sound environments which evolve continuously for long time periods. He imbues these self-creating structures with an abundance of sonic material, resulting in forms that flow through a wide range of moods, timbral combinations and textural densities. In their realization, Schumacher uses multiple speaker configurations which relate the sounds of the installation to the architecture of the exhibition space. Architectural and acoustical considerations thereby become basic structural elements.

Schumacher’s sound installations have been heard at Art in General, Apex Art, PS 1, the Queens Museum and The Kitchen and Sculpture Center in New York City, CCNOA in Brussels, the Technical University and Podewil in Berlin, the Museum for Applied Arts in Frankfurt , the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon, Triskel Arts Center in Cork, Ireland, Transmissions Festival in Chicago, SFIFEM in Sante Fe, the Waveform Festival in Sydney, Via 7 Festival in Paris, )toon Festival in Haarlem, and others.

All that shiny, glossy stuff - so large, so speedy, so colorful, so alluring, and so deceitful and unfulfilling. Not just post-Pollock in their computer splatter approach, Yoon Lee paintings also possess a postpop cynicism about advertising imagery and consumer culture even if it isnt immediately apparent or spelled out through helpful text. How do graffiti and urban architecture figure as influences within Lees work? Placed next to each other, are these acrylic polymer and pigment monuments powerful or numbing? Lee's new show, "Verve Syntheses," at the ever great Luggage Store - recently given a deserved deluxe interview profile in ANP Quarterly - should provide some answers. Yoon Lee Selected reviews

Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again.
Adapted from the legendary comic book series created by Will Eisner, "The Spirit" is a classic action-adventure-romance written for the screen and directed by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of "300" and "Sin City"). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality.

Vladislav Delay currently plays various liveshows with Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel) and Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric, NSI). Moritz von Oswald is a pioneer presenting a new, and possibly one-off take on the dub formula. After early collaborations with Thomas Fehlmann, von Oswald’s recordings with Mark Ernestus as Basic Channel, Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound – dub-inflected synth, slow modulation and deep beats – are revered classics that have deeply influenced a huge range of producers. Since 2008 he also teams up with Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer. A full lenght record is planned for 2008.

" Vantage Point " - V2 - 2008

While it’s unlikely to ever be held as closely to the hearts of long-term fans as their career high watermark LP The Ideal Crash, of 1999, Vantage Point nevertheless captures Belgian quintet dEUS at somewhere close to their best. Their fifth album in all, and second after 2005’s Pocket Revolution since they returned from a four-year hiatus, this collection showcases the band’s sonically adventurous take on mainstream radio rock, doffing a cap the way of Radiohead and Muse when it suits their own progress. " Trash Trash Trash " - Last Gang - 2008
Trash / Electronic / Experimental

While this full-length offering from the Crystal Castles relies upon the arcade-like sounds generated from their altered keyboards in every song, the progression of each track and the direction of the following track remain completely unpredictable throughout the album. There is the sonic barrage of "Alice Practice," the upbeat pop influenced "Good Times", the, intricate momentum guided instrumentals like "1991", and as the album comes to a close, Crystal Castles have one more surprise install for the unaware listener. "Tell Me What to Swallow" completely alters the sound dynamic that has been manipulated on every other track on the album. Here the digital effects are exchanged for acoustic guitars and ethereal vocals, demonstrating that this duo can move beyond their thrash-pop sound, but they don't necessarily need to. «As promised, we're back with another excellent work from Entia Non - aka James McDougall from Australia - called 'Lilt' (check out the previous one released last year). Like the previous one, expect to listen to lots of juicy field recordings from australian whereabouts artfully mixed with soothing ambient tones and drones of rare beauty, and also organic backgrounds to complete. For this release, James went to capture new sounds to some well known 'sand islands' located on the eastern coast of his enormous country, namely 'Stradbroke Island'. Pedro Leitão

I think this new :90 PSA for the people of Burma is my favorite Shilo piece to date. This collaborative effort was conceived with Carl Le Blond, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather Amsterdam, John Jackson, Director of Social Responsibility, MTV Networks and Suki Dusanj, Founder of The Burma Arts Board.

Every scene is full of beautiful details. From the modeling down to the grain pass, everything is coordinated to create a lush visual experience perfectly coordinated with the music. My favorite moment of choreography comes as the flowers catch the wind, visually echoing the piano’s accents as both the flowers and the music downward. Motionographer

"Our story begins with a poker game gone bad... a lifeless body on the floor, hand still clutching its cards... whacked on the head with a bass guitar. In the background, Mike Patton's haunting film score crescendos over the radio waves as the other two poker players argue over what to do with the body. Incinerator? Garbage disposal? " X Marks Destination " - Southern Fried - 2008
Alternative / Punk / Electronic

Manchester's The Whip finally release their long awaited debut album. Last year filled under nu-rave and now happily filled under the electro banner, The Whip certainly wear their influences not just on their sleeves, but on their entire neon wardrobe.

If New Order had a penny from every band who stole from them, they'd be able to build at least two new Haciendas. Unfortunately for them everyone seems to prefer rip-off bands than the real deal and New Order seem to be on the skids. So it's down to acts like The Whip to prove that they can step up to the plate and judging by 'X Marks Destination' they fall way below the mark. Even with stand out tracks as good as 'Divebomb' and 'Blackout', the album feels somehow lacking. Even with production by Jim Abbiss they find it hard to sound like a real rock band and more like a band not sure which clique to hang on to - electro, indie, new wave? Though on the up side, at least the album is less one dimensional as say a Fray album. Francis Jolley - Click Music

" The Sun And The Neon Light " - Get Physical - 2008

Though they've spent the last couple years mixing, remixing, being remixed, and, uh, being sampled by will.i.am, it's been a little while since Booka Shade's Movements, their last full-length of twitchy, funky Berlin microhouse, came out in 2006.

But Booka Shade are back and as luminescent as ever, if Get Physical's May 27 release of their third LP The Sun & The Neon Light is any indication. The album will be released as a regular CD and as a limited edition double CD, which will contain an extra disc of "club versions" of the album's tracks. The added tracks will also be available digitally. Pitchforkmedia

" April " - Caldo Verde - 2008
Indie / Folk / Alternative / Slow Core

Mark Kozelek has been turning over the same obsessions – for so long, and with such rigor, that on his new record he creates a kind of nostalgic feedback loop. Lyrics about “growing up Ohio mornings, sleeping in late” (“Lucky Man”) and the ghosts of departed lovers following him down halls (“Unlit Hallway”) reach evocatively back, both to specific moments in his catalog as well as to the memories signified. There’s never been an especial breadth to Kozelek’s music, nor has there needed to be, but an unmistakable break did occur when the Red House Painters left 4AD. The gauzy reverb, crisp snare rolls, and claustrophobic dissonance of the first records receded in favor of supple acoustic arrangements, cycling harmonies, and foregrounded vocals – accompanied in places by flannel-clad electric guitar. April, the second proper Sun Kil Moon record, is very much a product of this late phase. But in the same way that Kozelek’s songwriting compulsively works through the raw pain and ecstatic joys of youth, April pulls from the places where those memories first found expression. inFLUX is an evolving “fusion” experiment that took place over the course two months at the Laconia Gallery. Artists Mark Schoening and Linda Price-Sneddon will brought their respective materials and tools together to create an installation that would pulse with the energy of both the individual and the collaboration. Mark and Linda worked together in the space for the week prior to the first opening. The results of that exchange was on view during the month of March. Prior to the final opening event in April, the artists reentered the space to continue the conversation.

The exhibition of recent bundled sculptures of clothing, fabric, accessories and household items is inspired by the overt use and disposal of materials that line streets in machine compacted bundles; the surplus value of used clothing being exported to Third world countries in 1,000 lb bales and recent world events which have displaced people and caused them to lose their belongings. " Theory Of Machines " - Bedroom Community - 2006
Experimental / Electronic

Ben Frost On Theory Of Machines Frost presents a challenging and invasive sonic experience of digitally manipulated litany via minimal, guitar-oriented compositions that massage the lower-body and sometimes hurt above the waist ...A painfully beautiful experience.

Simply awesome... Frost reminds us that minimalism was never just the polished sheen of Reich and Glass, but also the sweat and grime of Michael Gira's Swans... Truly brutal... A deeper, darker minimalism- menacing and claustrophobic... This is Arvo Pärt as arranged by Trent Reznor... Magnificent

“Electronic musician and sound artist Stephen Vitiello transforms incidental atmospheric noises into mesmerizing soundscapes that alter our perception of the surrounding environment. He has composed music for independent films, experimental video projects and art installations, collaborating with such artists as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler and Dara Birnbaum. In 1999 he was awarded a studio for six months on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower One, where he recorded the cracking noises of the building swaying under the stress of the winds after Hurricane Floyd. As an installation artist, he is particularly interested in the physical aspect of sound and its potential to define the form and atmosphere of a spatial environment.” Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain catalog for the exhibition Ce qui arrive/Unknown Quantity, 2002

" The Devil, You + Me " - Cityslang - 2008
Alternative / Indie

This is an album driven by an individual and collective restlessness, something that manifests itself both in the endlessly inventive musical construction and the submerged lyrical narrative that hits you from the astonishing opening "Good Lies" all the way through to the fragile end-piece "Gone Gone Gone". The lyrics explore a world of uneasy being, structured like incantations formed to ward off the inescapable cycle of life and death, falling back on archetypes, religion, God and the devil himself. Acher seems to be resisting the inevitabilities of mortality, fighting the physical certainties of the world around us - "Gravity you won’t get me. Old gravity you won’t get me..." Aided by the suitably stellar ’Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra’, ‘Where In This World’ is another breathtaking moment, deploying strings and orchestration in a fashion that greatly transcends the usual pomp and circumstance of rock groups with big budgets: this is more like Morton Feldman as filtered through an array of carefully underplayed electronic treatments. Flying Lotus , My Brightest Diamond , Sankt Otten, Diego Maclean, Will Murai , Michael Fakesch, Chad Pugh, United Visual Artists, V-Scratch,

On June 10, Flying Lotus will release Los Angeles, his second album and highly anticipated debut for Warp Records.

"Los Angeles is a special place to me for obvious reasons, but for the majority of my life, I hated living here," he says in a press release. "I only realized that by leaving and being able to check out new places, new vibes, and to chill with different folks." Flying Lotus doesn't feature many guests on Los Angeles -- the best known vocalist, relatively speaking, is Daedelus' longtime collaborator and wife Laura Darlington. "With my projects, I try to have a visual narrative happening. I like the idea of my albums being movies," he says.

My Brightest Diamond announces the birthdate of the new album, A Thousand Shark's Teeth, June 17th on Asthmatic Kitty Records!

Originally meant to be a more classical, string quartet affair, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth slowly evolved and refined itself over a period of six years. The record, which was mixed by Husky Höskulds (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), was recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles and New York City, and features twenty different players all contributing little bits of musical magic. Influenced by artists such as Tricky, French composer Maurice Ravel and Tom Waits, in addition to the star exploration themes of Anslem Kiefer's paintings, the imaginary landscapes of photographer Robert ParkeHarrison, films by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Alice in Wonderland, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth is a musical snowglobe that sparkles each time you touch it. The songs, whose themes broach intimacy, kisses by moonlight, laundry, lost friendship and more, marry vast instrumentation – marimbas, harps, clarinets, French horns, rabid guitars, vibraphones to name a few – to create an unequaled amalgamation of style and color. In simple terms: it’s beautiful, and there’s nothing else quite like it.

Sankt Otten
From the opening track of ‘Wunden gibt es immer wieder’ Sankt Otten make their intentions known. Stephan Otten`s echoing rhodes piano falls over golden drones as Oliver Klemm drapes his elegant trademark guitar through the track like a neon waterfall.
The album represents a marked progression from the bands earlier output. It draws upon the heart of their previous forays into dark melancholic trip hop yet discards the form. In doing so the band have managed to present a musical vision that is even more epic, cinematic and noirish and distinctly their own.

This artwork was done for Michael Fakesch audio-visual project called VIDOS—a collection of music visualizations based on Michaels latest album DOS. The video‘s design is based on visual samples that quote Michaels auditory style and mixes analog with digital elements—metaphors of the real and the immaterial. This piece inspired the login illustration that vimeo commissioned from me for their redesign earlier this year; it is still in use throughout the site. The video is a condensed time lapse of screenshots over a several month period. Total physical drawing time is close to 40 hours and I'd add an equal amount of time for concept time and readying the print. A screenshot was taken every 5 seconds, which actually results in a full 18 minute video. I'll upload that for posterity later. Chad Pugh
