Haarlem Nachtburgermeester Candidates Pietertje Pep and Gijsbert Versgemalen Interview

Joost Varkevisser and Pieter Kamp have many faces and even more names, they are part of the infamous gang from Club Tarantula that gave Haarlem so many memorable nights like the closing from the Cinema Palace one of the best events in the whole year, they are in my humble opinion the best new band in Holland in 2011 The Pignose Willy's, are the kick ass Djs Pietertje Pep and Gijsbert Versgemalen and are the personification of real love for the Rock n Roll, Blues cause and they do it with class and passion ... my kind of people.

Few weeks ago i received a invitation to vote from them in the election for Nachtburgermeester or Night Mayors of Haarlem, generally speaking i always sign under for anything they are involved without asking but this time decided to ask.

What is exactly the Nachtburgermeester function ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN – Lets just say that the Nachtburgermeester is more of an inspirational role, someone who is active in creating a vibrant and vivid night life in a city. As for advising or decision making it all depends on the person who holds the “position”. I think an ideal Nachtburgermeester is already active and will continue to play a visible role in instigating events, gathering, parties in Haarlem at night.

Why have you guys decided to be candidates and what are you planning to achieve ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - Joost and I decided to do it just for good old fun. We think a Nightmayor should not necessarily be chosen by voting via Facebook or by running a hard boiled campaign. In one way we wanted to join in just to show how silly this all can be. This is obvious if you have read our “campaign” info. We even selected some friends and asked them to act as our "Wethouders". These are people that because of the roles they have played in the Haarlem night life/cultural scene, we think are even more entitled to the title of Nachtburgermeester then us. At least that is what we think. We think that this combination of people can put together some wild nights in Haarlem. On the other hand we do take the idea serious. The Haarlem nightlife needs a little kick in the ass.

Haarlem is the capital of North Holland and there is no night train. Every year there's talks and petitions but nothing seem to have any effect at all on changing this. Why is this happening? Is this something you guys can lobby about? Don't you think this would be of a great capital importance to the city ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - This is indeed a problem. We would love to see a night train finally come into being for Haarlem. But we are not necessarily going to lobby for this if we are chosen. This is a very old problem and people have been trying to change this for years. What we think is of greater importance is to focus on the nightlife happening in Haarlem. A night train between Haarlem and Amsterdam would be ideal, but we want people to stay and party in Haarlem, not necessarily flee to Amsterdam. We understand why people do. We want to make things happen hear. What we would rather see is a more vibrant student life in Haarlem. If only Haarlem had a broader academic spectrum, with an art school or something that would attract the working student to live in and go out in Haarlem, we think this would give the nightlife a real boost. The creation of a local platform where people can talk and share there feeling and about the Haarlem nightlife would be a good start. But these are very big plans and ideas, lets just start by throwing a great party!

You guys have a pretty dope rock n' roll background line up of people for your cabinet, is your team more focused on underground activities or will you also be focused on the more commercial aspects of nightlife activities ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - As for the cabinet that we have chosen, like I said earlier, these are the real night mayors of Haarlemtown in our eyes. These are some of the people making things happen in Haarlem right now. Even though we do have a love for the underground; we will not close our eyes for other initiatives or sub cultures. There is bar and a place for everybody in Haarlem. What a great fact is that in our humble little town. Just think of all the places that feature films, theatre and live music... all of these wonderful nightlife activities.

Nearby city's like Utrecht and Den Haag have outstanding festivals and events surrounding modern classical, cutting edge experimental electronic music, modern dance and Haarlem seems to be quite far off from this type of events. Is there a lack of interest in Haarlem for these types of events? If so, why do you think this? If not, do you think your team would be able to create or attract these types of events to Haarlem ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - Haarlem's has already some of the greatest events of it own. Just think of Haarlem Jazz, BevrijdingsPop, Haarlemse Heldenfestival, Stad als podium and many other local events.
Haarlem has a lot to offer. Haarlem is relatively small compared with Utrecht and Den Haag. These cities also have a larger student population as well. Out little town is not doing t bad. Much of it has to do with what people are aware of and the taking of their own initiative to check out what is happening in the city. Honestly there is always something going on. It just might not be exactly your thing.

Haarlem Philharmonic is a wonderful place but somehow quite exclusive that I've never been inside. Two years ago the Tindersticks played a concert there but the tickets were so ridiculously expensive that I missed it. Is there something that could be done, to have such a splendorous building more open, accessible and informal ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - Trying to change the ticket prices for performances is something a bit out of the Nachtburgermeesters control we think. It's up the venues themselves. Although we agree with your point that ticked prices are sometimes quite high. That is what happens when the city buildz these big places, the upkeep is very costly. Think of the ticket price as an investment in the place that we have to pay when we want to visit it. Though sometimes it does seem to us that the city planners of Haarlem thinks a bit to much of the city itself. What did they want to achieve by building these big expensive venues? Maybe they should have put some more thought in to who would be visiting them. On the other hand the city of Haarlem has the balls to try and see what happens.

I know for sure that when it comes to music you guys rock but what about Art in general, what's in your minds ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN – If you mean, the role art plays in the nightlife? Wells some good friends of ours are very talented artists. We saw the need to include them in our perspective cabinet. These guys painted a wicked wall mural in the Patronaat during the Haalemse Helden event, and they organize art exhibitions and movie nights under the name Horizontal Vertical. Horizontal Vertical was also open as a venue during the Stad als P, featuring live music, Dj’s and an exhibition. With there inclusion in our cabinet we hope to incorporate an artistic viewpoint into the nightlife activities where it seems right. Yet, other times we all just want to run wild through the night and get down and dirty. The night for Pep & Versgemalen is open for all!

who can participate in this voting and how ?

P. PEP & G. VERSGEMALEN - if you live in Haarlem send your votes by email before the 4th of November to lijn1@kunstlijnhaarlem.nl

---- Thanks tiago!!!!

Ray Caesar - A Dangerous Inclination

Stunning new work from the acclaimed surreal digital artists Ray Caesar

"Ray Caesar was born in 1958 in London. At an early age, his family moved to Toronto, Canada, where he currently resides. From 1977—80 he attended Ontario College of Art, followed by 17 years from 1980—96 working in the art & photography department of the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, documenting disturbing cases of child abuse, surgical reconstruction, psychology, and animal research. Coupled with inspiration from surrealists Kahlo and Dali, Caesar’s experiences at the hospital continue to influence his artwork. His haunting imagery is created digitally using 3D modeling software called Maya, mastered while working in digital animation for television and film industries from 1998—2001. In 1999, Caesar received a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Special Effects in a series. "

Nils Frahm - Felt

The wonderful label Erased Tapes has released the newest piece of art from the Berlin based pianist and composer Nils Frahm. I got more acquainted with the work of Nils Frahm last year with the his duo with Anne Muller excellent "Seven Fingers" exploring Modern Classical, IDM and sonic glitchy soundscapes with a lot of class.

"Felt" not altogether so different but explores the intimacy of a Modern Classical raw piano with a soft pop sensibility in a stunning and introspective way the use of space and silence like his predecessors Sylvain Chauveau and Rachel Grimes, guaranteed to be a wonderful soundtrack to gaze at Mark Rothko masterpieces.

Track nr. 2 "Less" is a absolute masterpiece exploring the subtleness of those elements together with microcosmic field recording ambients.

"Originally I wanted to do my neighbours a favour by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper."

zZz + Saelors = Light Light

I've been hearing talks for quite some time about the new zZz formation with two more band mates but actually never heard anything, yesterday by pure randomness two facebook friends liked something called Light Light around the same time and because they are two guys known for their always excellent music choices had to investigate immediately. First visit on Light Light facebook page i could see on the profile picture Boris and Daan two of the most recognizable faces from the Amsterdam underground scene the mega cool punk-organ duo zZz one of the biggest and best Dutch gifts to the music world, unfortunately for my incredible bad luck missed probably the last two gigs in Amsterdam cause i was on holidays and that sucked hard time. zZz shows are some of the craziest wild things i've seen live and i sincerely miss seem them live but they've moved on and now im very curious to see there new band live. The only track available as Daan Schinkel organ all over it, Bjorn Ottenheim backing vocals and sounds like a pretty solid Indie song that will easy see the light of the charts with no problem at all but its to early to make any judgments so we gotta wait for more, about the other band dont know anything but from the info available are a Amsterdam sort of mellow freak folk so make the track "Guru" like a logical idea from what could be the result from this music Amsterdam merge.

Richard Skelton - Black Combe

Richard Skelton music is in the magic or tragic realm like opposite pools that are obsessive dependent of each other or two colliding parallel universes, its like entering the most beautiful enchanted forest and you know you are being watched, life and death are expecting you and something terrifying will happen but you still gaze at the forest and think how beautiful it is.

"Black Combe" his delicate as silk, emotionally raw, full of repetitive resonance grief and epic fragmented soundscapes, scars embedded in rich melodies that are honest and pure and as all Richard Skelton mesmerizing intimate signatures, its so beautiful but always with a sentiment of infinite loss like a funeral anthem for a loved King that has dedicated his lifetime to please and create in the hillsides of Northern England and now is about to embark on a spiritual healing journey.

Richard Skelton has recently released his complete works in a box titled "Skura" with 20-disc, 90-track and 12-hours. "Black Combe" emerged from a disc of unreleased material and is now available for a full listening with many other releases at Aeolian Edition Bandcamp.

Tim Hecker - Dropped Pianos full stream

For this insanely and amazing music year have already some 5 albums lined up for best 2011 but Tim Hecker new album on Kranky "Dropped Pianos" is the ultimate MASTERPIECE and signs is name on the experimental electronic music genius altar with the likes of Vladislav Delay, Christian Fennesz, Richard Skelton and Ben Frost just to name a few.
One of the attributes that made me so drown to Tim Hecker music was the intensity, density and the magic invisible force field that pulls you straight inside to his drones that seems to be attached to powerful nuclear turbo boosters that makes every living creature or structure shake like the most imaginably violent tsunami all coordinated with echoed harmonic perfection.
I heard the phenomenal Ravedeath, 1972 that came out early in the year but for some reason wasn't really satisfied, like always i expect more and more.
With "Dropped Pianos" i was from the fist note overwhelmed with the simplicity and minimalism from the claustrophobic piano repetitive strokes with the sustained, sweeping drones and beautiful orchestrated microscopical glitchy orgasmic soundscapes that falls under the sub-logic perfect imperfections imaginary world of the abstract dripping Jackson Pollock masterpiece.
What makes "Dropped Pianos" epic, beyond and one of a kind is the perfect combination of Modern Classical, Drone, Noise and Glitch like was achieved by the Richard Skelton 2009 "Landings" but with the piano as main character in this story of music mutations and evolution.
Sketch 9 foggy and dizzy beginning that develops into a explosive and concentrated rocket fuel burst of a gigantic wave of rumbling reverb bass is probably the most powerful and overwhelming piece of music i heard since Ben Frost "Theory of Machines album track". Powerful, Simple, and Intense. GIGANTIC *****

Gijs van Lith, Dutch Abstract Painter Interview

Im thrilled and happy to post the interview with Hertogenbosch based Dutch Abstract Painter Gijs van Lith . I found Gijs paintings for the first time in a random Art walk in Amsterdam, first just by a simply glimpse from the gallery window i could see the massive canvas with abstract structures couldn't resist the appeal and was overwhelmed with the deept and intensity of the paintings.

Gijs van Lith was nominated for several awards and prizes, won the Amsterdam Young Art Talent in 2009 and his nominated for the 2012 Royal Dutch Painting, Gijs paintings can be seen in several exhibitions in the coming months and in private collections like Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

How do you define abstract art ?

well, personally i don’t see a difference between abstract or figurative art.

But your paintings are mainly abstract ??

Yes my works fall in that category at the moment, but I prefer not to think in those terms and cubicles.
Abstract art for me, is most of the time more pure, clear less distractions. There is more space/room for depth and its more universal. The image is sometimes more dominate and can distract the viewer. And affects the story of a artwork. But sometimes it comes together in the right way.
I’m painter, and currently my work falls within the category ‘Abstract’. But my latest works are both abstract and figurative. They’re called ‘A paintings womb’ and are the remains of painterly actions on a wall, of a artists studio. So some people will recognize this display and some won’t. But that’s oke.

I have two subjects that interest me; but my main focus lies on the paint it selves (the matter its selves, the act of painting, how color and form work, mainly the way the give depth)
The second subject is ‘painting’ it selves (the medium and ((art))history). Where do you place your selves .

So that’s why i show in the personal and introvert studio, no finished museum art piece but its womb.

Is Abstract Art a secret language of the senses?

No but maybe obscure one or language of a very few can speak. Maybe because we people have a more of a ‘you-tube mentality’, a concentration span of 3minutes. So it takes a bit a time, effort to truly see/read a painting and appreciates what the work is about. So that means you (the viewer) understands what decisions where made in the making and thinking--process till how it compare to the oeuvre and other works of the artist. And how it will position its selves with in art as well.
Because most people are used to look at a artwork, and see a more in a direct translation that represents the story. But I believe that it is more interesting to make work that doesn’t react or connect with directly to a situation within society or what is typical for a certain ‘time-geist’. I like that in a work or a series you as a viewer can see a personal development and read the steps a artist takes and appreciate the new things the artist is including in is work. And that maybe later on that symbolize as a mark for that specific time.

what do you think of the concept Abstract being " Everything and Nothing" ?

Willem de Kooning sad it best, I think.
he was looking for a form that could hold anything, nothing and something. And i believe that I’m getting closer and closer to my form that can hold anything.

How can you define that concept that your looking for ??

well, its a certain necessity, and longing urge

that sounds like Philosophy and Psychology in one sentence ?

Well making is thinking…after making, thinking and analyzing a work again and again is sort of a physical dialog with a work.
The work needs to feel right, like given the right answer the a question. It’s all in there and when you have enough right and wrong answers, you'll figgere out the question(s). But of course you have a starting point that involves your personal interest and fascinations. I’m really interested in the matter it selves, the paint. The way shape and color give depth. Also themes as mentality and time I find very interesting. In my latest two series ‘Skin’ and ‘A paintings womb’ becomes more clear. I see sometimes some similarities in my work and the way ledger is made in a shoe or coat or the rings of a tree. And I’m busy with more general and universal questions like; what is today’s position of painting?

Do you want to express and analyze yourself at the same time in your paintings. Sort of a scientist of the canvas?

No I don’t, I do recognized some parts of me, but in the process I don’t preserve the canvas as a mirror of me when I’m making.

Mark Rothko masterpieces were thought over and over as a mean to awakening of the social triviality of the daily live no to please but to shock

yes he's one of my favorites

What do you like about his work ?

his shows with great extravagance the plus-value of paint and the choice to only act as a painter. There is no other medium that he can use to represent and feel his message. Here painting is irreplaceable.
Why paint and why use paint if there are better-suited media to get your message better across.
Rothko shows that his work speaks to the soul of persons, and at the same time it symbolizes that if you paint and act only in painting, show the necessity of that specific choice.
He sometimes compares his work with a visit to a play in a theater, he sad something like; you could go the a theater but if you really wanna see a great play come and see my work.

what's you fuel ? what makes you feel wild and start painting ?

Sometimes a great show/exhibition. Sometime a good text I read, or a minder-wonder. But mainly it’s in the small things, a glimpse of a visual phenomena, when i see something out-side or in town. Colors/shapes that interest me, i see them for what they are to me, without what they represent to the rest of the world.

what is you biggest ambition as a painter ?

oeh! thats a difficult one, I ll have to call on the fifth amendment ;).
biggest ambition is: when i can say that i found the perfect answer to my question and then I’ll stop painting probably

i work normally 5/6 days a weeks
and i find about 80/90 'answers' a year, and probably about ten/twenty right ones.

After every answer is a new bigger question, so you will paint forever ?

yep;) I found some answers down the last 3 years. But much bigger ones came to follow. Which is nice and interesting how that evolves.

you have a creative and inquisitive mind that is the trade mark of a great thinker :)
