Art Amsterdam 13 - 17 May
All the galleries at Art Amsterdam will be staging a solo exhibition. This means that 120 artists will have solo exhibitions devoted to their work, which is unique at a contemporary art event. This is how Art Amsterdam will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the period from Wednesday 13 May to Sunday 17 May 2009. 120 galleries will display the latest developments in contemporary art at Art Amsterdam, with paintings, photos, sculptures, installations and videos. The participating galleries include all the top-flight Dutch galleries, plus 31 foreign galleries from Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, South Africa, Japan and Korea.

NY Perspectives - Amsterdam discovered by NY photographers

To mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s discovery of Manhattan, Foam is teaming up with the Amsterdam City Archives and the John Adams Institute to organise an exhibition about Amsterdam, as seen through the eyes of four New York photographers. Gus Powell, Carl Wooley, Richard Rothman and Joshua Lutz were each commissioned to explore a different aspect of the city: the street, the night, the water and the outskirts. This commission has resulted in surprising images, which show an unknown side of Amsterdam.
These images will be on display in De Bazel building in Amsterdam from May until August 2009. While the exhibition Richard Avedon - Photographs 1946–2004 exhibition is being dismantled, Foam will temporarily close its doors, but thanks to the cooperation with the City Archives, the continuity of the photography on offer in Amsterdam is guaranteed.

From 11 to 14 June, the Filmmuseum Amsterdam and the Mediafonds (Dutch Cultural Media Fund) present the DOKU.ARTS international festival. Around thirty creative documentaries about art and artists can be seen at this fourth edition of the festival. The programme includes brand new work, as well as highlights from the Filmmuseum’s collection. This year the focus is on architecture.
Filmmuseum Amsterdam
The year 2009 marks the start of building the new Filmmuseum (a spectacular design on the north bank of the river IJ by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects). Therefore, this year’s edition of DOKU.ARTS will concentrate on architecture. Involving complex logistics and decisions, architecture is, out of all art forms, the one that is most closely related to filmmaking. Cinematic space has always been a source of inspiration for architects, while the fascination of many filmmakers with architecture makes buildings a prominent element in their storytelling. Besides films about architecture, the programme contains documentaries about photography, the visual arts, the performing arts, music, cinema and literature.

Kaleidoscopic window on the world
Meet the most international cultural event in Holland this summer in its 62nd running – the Holland Festival. Known as the “kaleidoscopic window on the world,” this event brings together a wide variety of top-notch performance arts, visual arts, literature, as well as architecture to many of Amsterdam’s best cultural venues. This year there are over 40 events spread over more than 3 weeks full of performances – a real kaleidoscope with gems for every taste and interest.
Modern, daring, avant-garde
Although theater and music are the focus of this festival, don’t think it’s all classical and old school. Some of the performances at this event have been the most daring, modern experiments in multidisciplinary art forms. One of these on show this year is the award-nominated Eine Kirche der Angst vor dem Fremden in mir by German director Christoph Schlingensief, where gospel music, poetry, and projected photography meet inside a church with an eerie effect that will both provoke and touch its audience.
Lowlands 21 - 23 August!
A Campingflight To Lowlands Paradise is exactly what it promises to be: a true backpacker’s Garden Of Eden and Holland’s most adventurous cultural outdoor event, offering a cutting edge choice of only the best in alternative music, film, stand-up comedy, visual arts, literature and (street)theatre.
For three days in August, a township with 55,000 inhabitants arises in the middle of the country.
