Andrea Parker - Here's one i made Earlier ( 2007 )

"Here's One I Made Earlier is a fine collection of productions from Andrea Parker, recognised as one of the world's leading female electronic artists alongside Ellen Allien and Miss Kittin. The album showcases her keen ear for haunting melody, abstract rhythms, found sounds and subtle atmospheres. Predominantly recorded alongside her long time studio partner, David Morley, this collection of inspirational electronics unveils long deleted and rare lost gems from the vaults of such esteemed labels as K7!, R&S, Infonet and Quatermass. Known for her dark, experimental sets and sublime productions, Parker has pioneered sonic abstraction and electronic beats for some fifteen years now -- 'the grandma of electro!' An avid enthusiast of classic analog synthesizers and drum machines such as the Arp, Serge, Buchla, Fairlights and of course the 808, she chooses them over the current fashion for software. Early on she collaborated on some electronic adventures as Inky Blacknuss (with Alex Knight) producing timeless gems like 'Blacknuss.' Then formed 'Two Sandwiches Short Of A Lunchbox' with David Morley on Apollo/R&S and together they went on to produce the classic EP Angluar Art (Infonet) -- both of which can be heard on this new but old collection. In time she signed to Mo Wax, releasing the singles 'Melodius Thunk,' 'The Rocking Chair,' 'Ball Breaker,' and the full length album Kiss My Arp. Parker's productions have many emotions and sonic textures -- a fact not lost on the film and advertising fraternity who have used tracks from her output extensively. Their uses and users have been diverse, from a track on blockbuster movie Vanilla Sky where Tom Cruise is dancing to 'Too Good To Be Strange' and Patrick Moore's 'Sky At Night' to a documentary on NASA and a mugging crime re-enactment on Richard & Judy." forcedexposure

Gavin Bryars | Philip Jeck | Alter Ego - The Sinking of the Titanic

Gavin Bryars' 'The Sinking of the Titanic' is, and I say this with confidence, one of the finest pieces of music you could ever wish to own. Written in 1969 it has journeyed through the lands of modern classical, experimental and electronic music netting dedicated followers on its way, and each and every time I hear it I become more convinced of its genius. Bryars wrote the piece to mirror the last moments of the doomed voyage, when the Titanic sunk and famously the band played on. According to survivors the music being played was a rendition of 'Autumn', an Episcopal hymn which forms the basis of Bryars' composition. The notes and phrases from the hymn are worked in and out of the piece, sinking through the waters, effected by time, nostalgia and the cavernous reverberations of the ship itself with each scrape and hiss worked into Bryars' incredible vision. For this special performance of the piece we see Bryars (on double bass) alongside Italian ensemble Alter Ego (not to be confused with the German electronic duo of the same name) and experimental turntablist Philip Jeck, and the result is arguably its most stunning rendition to date. The most noticeable addition is Jeck, whose expertise and unique style seems to fit like the final piece of the puzzle as his crackles and motifs melt into the architecture of the recording as if they had always been there. This additional layer of nostalgia brought forth by these found sounds adds a significant sense of history , forcing the mind back into hazy film footage and decomposed photos, a perfect match for the subject matter. Also of note are Alter Ego, who surprised me with their stunning renditions of Philip Glass recently, and work comparable magic here on Bryars' composition, with their ensemble bringing in the sounds of bottles, tape recorders, laptops and percussion on top of more traditional instruments. The sounds are merged together effortlessly to form a fog of harmony and memory, perfectly melting the themes which Bryars intended his piece to convey in the first place. Really words can't do justice to 'The Sinking of the Titanic', like William Basinski's 'The Disintegration Loops' there is a timelessness, a patience and an ineffable beauty to this music that almost impossible to describe. Unique, flawless and totally essential music. Boomkat

karl–Johan Nilsson - The Seams

Breaking a six-month silence for us is Karl–Johan Nilsson's The Seams. A work featuring wide, sweeping strokes from minimal brushes that add up to a thick canvas of sound - electrical static scratches and crawls, rolling waves of rhythm, bass, guitar, synths and ambiance come from all sides. Sounds seemingly trying to escape while a song progresses or takes form.

The Seams' end results are not entirely focused on the minimalist focus or common click-gut-glitch manners, but rather a sublime and epic manner full of moody curiousities, melody and melodrama built from the intricacies these styles bring and their combinations to a larger scale. One

Cristian Gualpa - Flotante EP

«Hailing from Mendoza, Argentina, here is an EP release of warm ambient idm beats, from Cristian Gualpa, called “Flotante”. In five tracks, Gualpa explores an electronic language of aquatic beats, somehow related with the kind of stuff explored by artists like Arovane, and also a language with the laboratorial driving force that one can usually recognize on releases from labels like Raster-Noton. Indeed, while the last track “Capital Solar” develops a warm sense of melody, tracks like “Buenhogar” or “Al Aire” enter the mathematical domain, with a techno background underneath. Listening to these tracks is like admiring the architecture of a building, with one feet dancing at the same time. Dark ambience comes along with “Previo”, but even here the mechanical beat gives way to an ethereal melody. “Posada” sums up the ideas expressed before, and is both a relaxing or restless place to stay, depending of which things the listener pays attention to: the warm aquatic melody underneath or the drilled beat that gives structure to the track, which reminds of early Autechre releases. With about 20 minutes, “Flotante” is enjoyable brainy electronics, to be listened with headphones, and an excellent debut for Cristian Gualpa.» - César Laia
