Anton Corbijn - Inwards and Onwards

Anton Corbijn - inwards and onwards
Photography Museum Amsterdam
23 June - 1 September 2011

"Foam is proud to present Anton Corbijn's most recent photographic project. In it he has aimed the camera at a few of his favorite artists, including Gerhard Richter, Alexander McQueen, Richard Prince, Iggy Pop, Anselm Kiefer, Damien Hirst, Tom Waits, Peter Doig, Bruce Springsteen, Lucian Freud and Karel Appel.

Corbijn's love for the musical and creative spirit is already well known. Collaborating on a short film (Some YoYo Stuff, 1993) with artist Don van Vliet - also known as Captain Beefheart - made his appreciation for the painter clear. This probably also had to do with the fact that his grandfather was a painter. The project strippinggirls which he produced with Marlene Dumas in 2000 also had an influence on his interest in the painter.

Anton Corbijn is interested in how artists struggle with the creative process: the pain and the drama of the act of creation. His monumental black-and-white portraits blend austerity and aesthetics and attract attention because of the deliberate and exacting way they capture the character of the person being portrayed. The work shows Corbijn's concentrated gaze, his feeling for wonder and his ability to empathize with another." Foam

Swedish band , The Radio Dep is releasing a new album "Clinging to a scheme" on Labrador Records in the coming month

"The band has combined the most unequalled components from their previous albums “Lesser matters” and “Pet grief” with soul guitars, P-funk, glittering, distorted synthesizers, cut/paste-beats, 70’s futuristic orchestra sounds and sounds you don't know what they are. Things you've never heard before. "Clinging to a scheme" is way beyond pleasing - it's absolutely breathtaking."

Ari Marcopoulos - It might seem familiar
27 February 2010 until 16 June 2010

This spring Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam presents an exhibition by the Amsterdam-born photographer and filmmaker, Ari Marcopoulos. Marcopoulos (b. 1957, Amsterdam) set off for New York in 1979 and quickly became a significant documenter of alternative youth culture in America throughout the last three decades. Foam is showing work from his entire oeuvre, ranging from photos of the emerging hip-hop and downtown art scene in New York in the 1980s and the snowboard and skate culture in the 1990s, to frequent depictions of his own family in Northern California over the last ten years.

Marcopoulos’s work is characterized by a remarkable feeling of intimacy. Whether it concerns celebrities from the world of music or art, or his own family, he approaches his subjects in an intuitive manner and he always knows how to get close to the heart. His photos are direct, extremely personal and subtly structured. Recurrent themes are art, music, graffiti and the vulnerability of the human body. The exhibition shows a cross-section of his work from the last 30 years, varying from grainy black and white copies, monumental colour photos, videos, books and zines. Foam

Long time favorites , Lali Puna is preparing the release on their new album " Our Inventions " out on Morr Music 02 April.

More than half a decade has elapsed since the release of Faking The Books, Lali Puna's third (and hitherto most recent) long-player, but the band's impact on the climate of electronic rock music remains palpable. Along with sister-group The Notwist, this Weilheim quartet have helped map out the musical landscape for modern, experimentally minded pop music, and Our Inventions finds Lali Puna continuing to push the frontiers of their medium. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA), in the very heart of Europe, attracts people and organisations from around the world. Since centuries, Amsterdam has been a hub for world trade. In the years to come, the local authorities will make a joint and critical effort to pro-mote the more intensive use of their territories.

To give international investors and companies a better opportunity of getting to know about all the possibilities of the area an unique experience was created. What in the old days used to be a model of the landscape from wood and foam, committed to stay in one spot, now became a digital interactive standalone application with a voiceover which allows delegations to travel around the world and show in easy access the look, feel and facts of AMA. Project on behalf of and in collaboration with INDG. Monkai

Alexander Rodchenko - Revolution in Photography
Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam
18 December 2009 - 17 March 2010

Foam presents a unique retrospective of the world-famous Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko. The exhibition will contain more then 200 vintage photographs some of which have never been exhibited in the West before. Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) is one of the great innovators of twentieth-century avant-garde art and one of its most versatile practitioners. Having first gained international acclaim as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer, Rodchenko took up the practice of photography in the early 1920s, convinced that it would become the artistic medium of his era. Over the course of the following two decades he developed a bold new vocabulary of acute camera angles, extreme foreshortenings of perspective and close-ups of surprising details. In addition to introducing design as an integral element of photography, Rodchenko’s approach balanced formal concerns with an interest in documenting the social and political life of the Soviet Union. In the process, he helped to change the way people perceived not only photography, but also the role of the photographer. Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

No other living creature features as heavily in contemporary character design and art as the humble hare. But what exactly makes bunnies so irresistible to artists, designers and illustrators worldwide? Depending on the viewers' cultural context rabbits can symbolise anything from insanity, alertness, defencelessness, all the way to promiscuity, magic powers and utter innocence. By condensing the endless variations of the rabbit motif into one ultimate system - a perfect bunny mandala - the true nature of the beast emerges: the eternal essence of rabbit.

Pictoplasma (http://www.pictoplasma.com) asked internationally established and upcoming character designers, illustrators and artists around the globe to send in their versions of rabbits, bunnies, hares and everything in between. The result is a full-scale bunny overdose, with far more than 1.500 individual rabbits from 500+ international contributers. Visual Complexity

Paint a Future is a charity founded by the Dutch artist, Hetty van der Linden.
Hetty travels all over the world, painting with disadvantaged children. She tells them to paint their dreams and that the dreams they paint might one day come true.

Established and well-known artists from many different countries are inspired by the dreams the children paint, incorporating them into their own works of art. The paintings are sold and the proceeds go directly back to the child - helping to fulfill their dreams and create a better future for them and their families.

By purchasing a painting you are not only buying a work of art for your own investment and enjoyment, you are helping a child build a better future. Paint a Future

It was a twist of fate that brought about Modeselektor and Apparat’s reunion in the spring of 2008. Szary and Bronsert, both proud fathers, were on their way to the "Stadtbad Mitte" (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) with their children for their regular Monday swimming lessons when they ran into Ring, a devout bachelor who happened to be accompanied by several dubious females. After a battering of verbal abuse, the three gentlemen quickly made peace and decided to get back to work on their collaborative album post haste. Thus, Moderat was reformed.

In recording Moderat’s self-titled album, the three men began by renting studio space at the legendary Berlin Hansa Studios (where Bowie recorded Heroes) in order to record the album in analog with the help of the studio’s vintage tube technology and an old EMI console from 1972, restored especially for Moderat. American software designer, Joshua Kit Clayton, was hired to program a superb reverb algorithm s! pecifically for the recording process of this album. This exquisite sound design is one of the reasons why the promotional copies can be listened to only in mono. Finished copies will, of course, be in full stereo.Bpitch

The festival presents work of independent dance artists from the Netherlands as well as abroad, from up-and-coming young talent as well as more established artists.

Springdance presents dance in all its different contexts, inside the theatre as well as site-specific, from performance to installation, in order to extend the definition of what dance is, or could be. The artists at Springdance explore the boundaries of dance, offering a unique perspective on this form of art and of the world around us.

The Disposable Film Festival was created in 2007 to celebrate the artistic potential of disposable video: short films made on non-professional devices such as one-time use video cameras, cell phones, point and shoot cameras, webcams, computer screen capture software, and other readily available video capture devices. With people everywhere posting videos online, we felt the time was right to draw attention to the creative potential of this new mode of filmmaking. Far beyond its initial roles for video blogging and documentation, the DFF offers a forum to display how disposable media can be used for creative purposes. The DFF hosts screenings, competitions, and other events to showcase the best work within the disposable genre.
