Mixtape for Kikas,OpenStreetMap,The Big Picture, spY,Onedotzero,Gregor Samsa, Anja Boretzki ,Dude a Day,Slumdog Millionaire,Esther Stocker

An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.

The year 2008 in photographs
2008 has been an eventful year to say the least - it is difficult to sum up the thousands of stories in just a handful of photographs. That said, I will try to do what I've done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It's not the story of 2008, it's certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. This is a multi-entry story, 120 photographs over three days. Watch for part 2 and part 3 tomorrow and the next day.

SpY is an artist from Madrid. His first actions appeared in the middle eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to work with other forms of artistic communication in the street: large posters, modified billboards, interventions that were experimental in the first nineties.

His work consists in the playful reappropiation of urban elements, that he replicates or transforms and then installs in the street. All his production stems from the observation of the urban environmnet, a sense sharpened by years of experience as a graffiti artist. A careful attention for the context of each piece and a constructive and non-invasive attitude unmistakably characterize his actions.spY

Uber cool illustrations @ The Dude a Day Project

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 drama film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is based on the book Q and A written by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup. Loveleen Tandan began as the film's casting director but was appointed by Boyle as a "co-director".

The film, shot and set in India, follows a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on a game show and exceeds people's expectations, raising the suspicions of the game show host and law enforcement.

Following screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Slumdog Millionaire had a limited release on 12 November 2008 to critical acclaim and awards success. Wikipedia

2008 Most bizarre personal experience , Kikas Message

Last wednesday was asleep when i got a message from kikas on my mobile , i woke up thinking that was the alarm clock.
Cool to get messages from kikas in the morning , got up , had my breakfast , got on my bike and when to the train station.

Then something quite strange happened , normally the train is at 06.45 , this time it was at 05.41 witch is not normal , i jumped on the train , when i was inside looked at my mobile to check the time , was 1.42

I was incredibly early to work , jumped out of the train on the next stop , unfortanly there was no trains back to Haarlem at that time , so i had to walk back , pick the bike and go back to bed , arrived home at 02.45 . lol

You may have heard the original version of this track on Brownswood Bubblers Two or the Flying Lotus single "Reset". This mix by Exponential Records artist Rae Davis opens up the sound and pushes the deep, bassy, glitchy, dreamy, hip hop goodness even further. The sweetness you here is the voice of Andreya Triana.

MIT recorded their first album "Coda", Namosh Arslan produced it. Of course, the attitude is punk. Of course, the drumkit of Felix Römer is still rattling. Surely, the moog-arrangements of Tamer Özgönenc define the sound. And logically is, that Edi Winarni's crowing voice still dominates the vocals. But it sounds different!

These New Puritans' debut album arrives on a wave of excitement. Angular, brash and unashamedly intellectual - the band are seen by some as exemplifying a 'New Eccentricity' in guitar music. A movement away from luddite, retro indie. TNP sound great on paper. They cite all manner of bizarre influences – from Elizabethan magician John Dee to rap legends The Wu Tang Clan, minimalist composer Steve Reich to King William the Conqueror. They hail from the same Southend scene that spawned The Horrors and posses an accomplished producer in Gareth Jones (Wire, Liars, Einsturzende Neubauten).

It appears there is a second "kosmische musik" period in full bloom around the world at the moment, not so much "kosmische" as in "krautrock" but instead "cosmic". Just here at kranky we have the celestial symphonies of Stars of the Lid, the guitar circle prog-psych of White Rainbow, the astral folk explorations of Lichens, the cut and splice electro-motorik of Andrew Pekler, the alien space-blues of Valet, and now the half German, half American duo Cloudland Canyon who actually bring the full-on "krautrock" on.

The associations that come to mind with the new album tracks, from which there is already an EP “BLACK METAL” are clear. The music’s foundations are impossible to miss: from Heavy Metal all the way to Punk Rock. However ALIAS cannot be easily put into a clichéd category. It isn’t Rock that puts on electronic clothes for a day. The Rock was once there and could be characterized as a stain that you can’t get out anymore. Electro-Rock? Why? Above everything else, it is Techno that delivers every tenor, regardless of whether it is Electro or Rock, through Techno.

Shinichi Osawa (大沢伸一 Shinichi Osawa), also known as Mondo Grosso, is an artist currently signed onto Avex Trax's "Rhythm Zone" label. Previously he was signed to Sony Music Japan's FEARLESS RECORDS division and released albums under the title of 'Mondo Grosso', which is is Italian for "big world". He was born on February 7, 1967. Over the course of his career he has worked in genres from Acid Jazz to House, with strong influences of underground club music, though his recent work has been in the genre of electro house. HMV Japan rated Mondo Grosso at #95 on their "Top 100 Japanese Pop Artists".
