Vladislav Solovjov - Stellar

Magnificent motion graphics by Saint-Petersburg based Vladislav Solovjov, the short piece is a stunning view of the planet Earth and the Universe in its complete wonder that easily could be the intro to a epic sci-fi film. Vladislav Solovjov work is a serious reminder of another amazing Russian artist, the Ulyanovsk based motion graphics mega talent Maxim Zhestkov.

Three masters of the electronic medium; Francisco Lopez, John Wall and John Oswald will create new work in collaboration with the ensemble. Each of their work is characterised by a distinctive style, and a unique approach to sound. The fact that these composers work largely in a medium outside traditional notated music makes this project particularly interesting. The extreme techniques used by these composers in their electronic work will be transformed into the acoustic sound of the ensemble.

Whoever has experienced the concerts of Spanish composer Francisco Lopez, knows that he has a preference for blindfolding the audience in order to experience his subsonic sound world on a more primary level. Over the last twenty five years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world.

The British sample-composer John Wall makes collages from rock, jazz and classical music, where the source of the material is barely recognisable. Rather than focusing on the frantic juxtaposition of different sources, he fuses the snippets into organic flows of real music. The starting point for the collaboration with Ensemble MAE will be the work ‘Fractuur', which will be transformed and reworked into the colours of the ensemble through use of live electronics.

John Oswald is famous for his ‘Plunderphonics’, collages made entirely from other music, such as Michael Jackson, Elvis or Bruce Springsteen. He nearly always incorporates an electroacoustic element to his productions, focusing on metamorphosis and eclecticism realised from existing materials

Brent Arnold (Brooklyn, NY, United States) , violoncelliste , composer & singer.
My music is experimental songs using amplified cello, voice, and effects (loops, distortion, etc). I incorporate sonic exploration, American & European folksong, improvisation, rock, South Asian and Middle Eastern melody, electronics, European classical, and more. My solo show has been compared to Imogen Heap, Andrew Bird, and Final Fantasy... but very original. More information is below.

I have worked with indie rockers Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney and Built to Spill, to electronicists Dj/rupture and Filastine, to pop artists like Lenny Kravitz, to experimentalists like Project W and Eyvind Kang and Degenerate Art Ensemble.

Ane Brun @ Daytrotter

In the entire canon of popular music’s many different forms of love songs, the best ones tend to come from the point of view of someone who just can’t make any fucking sense about why it went wrong. But, to be clear, this doesn’t include the songs that can sound ill-tempered or by someone holding a major gripe, someone unable to not feel completely and hopelessly wronged to a disturbing end. It’s the category that is filled by songs that still feel like the love that came before the fallout, of the time and the place where it all began, without malice and sullenness ever being a glimmer in either party’s flaming eyes. These remain as the tender declarations that they could have been in the middle of all the new romance, when time seemed to stand still and rush by like a dragster all at once. It’s the kind of spell that the blood gets put on it during this swooning process, where it’s hot and flooded with all of these odd new endorphins that take over the senses, start running the show and before anyone knows it, the plug’s been pulled and the comedown has already begun – and it’s in that moment of ill-configuration when these songs of loss and unabashed reflection are at their apex, when they are able to just get it all out there in an unprocessed, unedited plume.

On April 27, visionary artist DJ Hell will release his masterpiece Teufelswerk (German for “Devil’s Work.”) Across 16 exquisite tracks divided into two themes, “Night” and “Day”, Hell weaves an intoxicating spell. The nocturnal side offers a contemporary interpretation of Chicago house and Detroit techno. Its sunnier sister disc finds Hell embracing the rich cosmic groove of his roots. A lush, narcotic odyssey, the album sounds unlike anything he’s produced in the past. But at the same time, Hell has drawn on his wealth of experience and put everything he knows into Teufelswerk.

" Confuse the Marketplace " - DFA - 2007
Dance Punk / Electro / Disco House

Following the success of the smash sophomore album, Sound of Silver, Lcd Soundsystem gives us the Confuse the Marketplace vinyl-only EP, right on the heels of the commercial release of his disco-epic 45:33. The EP consists of three tracks, all previously unavailable in North America and all aimed directly at the dancefloor. The sensational "Freak Out/Starry Eyes" is a soulful two-part jam laced with heavy congas and soothing vocals that continues in the same cosmic disco vein as 45:33. Also included is "North American Scum," subtitled "Onanistic Dub" and remixed by James Murphy and longtime DFA studio engineer Erick Broucek. Percussion-heavy track "Hippie Priest Bum-Out" completes the trio, emphasizing Murphy's long-apparent love of all things drum-related. Insound

Now that we are talking about the DFA , its about time to take out of the pocket one of the best kept secrets. One of my favorites out of the James Murphy & Company Label DFA , ive been rocking "Thats the Way i Like it" for a long time , just can't get enought of it.
The good news are , they are back in studio and maybe new stuff will come out this year. Cant Wait ...

Pixeltan are a band consisting of Devin Flynn, Mika Yoneta (both also of Plate Tectonics, along with Adam drummer from Olneyville Sound System) and drummer Hisham Bharoocha (ex-Black Dice). The Pixeltan project was actually begun with DFA in 2001 and the DFA produced track Itchy Cable was completed for inclusion on the Troubleman compilation Mix Tape. But things got sidetracked, for both Pixeltan and DFA. They released a self-produced EP on Troubleman, Devin and Mika formed the free-form hip hop band Plate Tectonics and Hisham got busy with dual careers in Black Dice and as a artist and designer. In April of 2004, after Hisham left Black Dice and DFA reconnected with Devin and Mika, the never-finished tracks were revisited and work commenced once again, as the rediscovered tunes now sounded more relevant than ever. The results include the A Side "Get up / Say What," a DFA remix of 2 Pixeltan tracks that contain some of the subbiest, dubbed out death-disco ever to emerge from the DFA studios.

" Our Sleepless Forest " - Resonant - 2008
Experimental / Ambient / Psychedelic

Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a Frighteningly young three-piece from South London .

Our Sleepless Forest music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build melodies are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent at times of the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there moments but on the whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated with music of this genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard.

One of the best albums of the year . A must Have .

" J'accuse Ted Hughes / Agnès B Musique " - SYR - 2008
Post- Rock / Experimental

Another great instalment in Sonic Youth SYR series, this one features two engrossing, lengthy pieces : 'J'Accuse Ted Hughes' and 'Agnes B Musique'. The former was recorded at All Tomorrow's Parties 2001, when the band were premiering material from their NYC Ghosts & Flowers album, and takes the form of a ragged twenty-two minute noise jam featuring free association lyrics by Kim Gordon ("I sent my poem to Good Housekeeping. They paid me ten dollars" she imparts). Meanwhile, the more composed, studio based experiments of 'Agnes B Musique' were originally intended as a soundtrack work as part of a collaboration with the French designer of the title. Sadly, the project never saw completion, instead surfacing some five years later as this incredible eighteen minute B-side, featuring the production and performance of then-bandmember Jim O'Rourke, who helps sculpt the piece into something more dynamic and more fully formed than the anything-goes droner it might have otherwise been. Awesome stuff - Highly recommended. Boomkat

The French riots of 2005 inspired the photographer Denis Darzacq to head for the housing estates on the outskirts of the capital. But he wasn't after gritty shots of urban deprivation, he tells Angelique Chrisafis. He wanted something more - to capture an entire generation in freefall and with no one to catch them.

" X Marks Destination " - Southern Fried - 2008
Alternative / Punk / Electronic

Manchester's The Whip finally release their long awaited debut album. Last year filled under nu-rave and now happily filled under the electro banner, The Whip certainly wear their influences not just on their sleeves, but on their entire neon wardrobe.

If New Order had a penny from every band who stole from them, they'd be able to build at least two new Haciendas. Unfortunately for them everyone seems to prefer rip-off bands than the real deal and New Order seem to be on the skids. So it's down to acts like The Whip to prove that they can step up to the plate and judging by 'X Marks Destination' they fall way below the mark. Even with stand out tracks as good as 'Divebomb' and 'Blackout', the album feels somehow lacking. Even with production by Jim Abbiss they find it hard to sound like a real rock band and more like a band not sure which clique to hang on to - electro, indie, new wave? Though on the up side, at least the album is less one dimensional as say a Fray album. Francis Jolley - Click Music

" The Sun And The Neon Light " - Get Physical - 2008
Electronic

Though they've spent the last couple years mixing, remixing, being remixed, and, uh, being sampled by will.i.am, it's been a little while since Booka Shade's Movements, their last full-length of twitchy, funky Berlin microhouse, came out in 2006.

But Booka Shade are back and as luminescent as ever, if Get Physical's May 27 release of their third LP The Sun & The Neon Light is any indication. The album will be released as a regular CD and as a limited edition double CD, which will contain an extra disc of "club versions" of the album's tracks. The added tracks will also be available digitally. Pitchforkmedia

" April " - Caldo Verde - 2008
Indie / Folk / Alternative / Slow Core

Mark Kozelek has been turning over the same obsessions – for so long, and with such rigor, that on his new record he creates a kind of nostalgic feedback loop. Lyrics about “growing up Ohio mornings, sleeping in late” (“Lucky Man”) and the ghosts of departed lovers following him down halls (“Unlit Hallway”) reach evocatively back, both to specific moments in his catalog as well as to the memories signified. There’s never been an especial breadth to Kozelek’s music, nor has there needed to be, but an unmistakable break did occur when the Red House Painters left 4AD. The gauzy reverb, crisp snare rolls, and claustrophobic dissonance of the first records receded in favor of supple acoustic arrangements, cycling harmonies, and foregrounded vocals – accompanied in places by flannel-clad electric guitar. April, the second proper Sun Kil Moon record, is very much a product of this late phase. But in the same way that Kozelek’s songwriting compulsively works through the raw pain and ecstatic joys of youth, April pulls from the places where those memories first found expression. inFLUX is an evolving “fusion” experiment that took place over the course two months at the Laconia Gallery. Artists Mark Schoening and Linda Price-Sneddon will brought their respective materials and tools together to create an installation that would pulse with the energy of both the individual and the collaboration. Mark and Linda worked together in the space for the week prior to the first opening. The results of that exchange was on view during the month of March. Prior to the final opening event in April, the artists reentered the space to continue the conversation.

The exhibition of recent bundled sculptures of clothing, fabric, accessories and household items is inspired by the overt use and disposal of materials that line streets in machine compacted bundles; the surplus value of used clothing being exported to Third world countries in 1,000 lb bales and recent world events which have displaced people and caused them to lose their belongings.
